42 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2016 Table Tennis Racquet Club While the December Play Day was a bust, the January one was a must. The weather was beautiful, and a dozen club members came out to play. With new play day boss Howard Nelson taking charge, the rotation of players was handled smoothly, but it still helped to be on the winning team in order to stay on the court. Howard and Mickey Nelson continued their practice of having prize drawings. Though the search was not as discriminating as Diogenes's, Padoo Peralta was considered honest enough to conduct the ticket drawing. The first ticket belonged to Den Stevens, who chose the mystery bag with the ominous "?" on it. As it turned out, Den won a sack of snacks and candy suitable for a one-man Super Bowl party. The next ticket drawn by Padoo said "RC," so Richard Carrasco got the second prize, a metal object d'art in the shape of a dog with a bobbling head. Designed as a friendly welcome for one's front door step, the dog will adorn the Carrasco front porch along with the tall cat won last spring by Shao. This edition of the Breeze will arrive in mailboxes at the beginning of March, shortly before the beginning of the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells, where the top men and women professionals will compete in the fifth major tournament. With a world-class draw, including the return of Venus Williams, tennis fans will have the opportunity to see two weeks of great tennis in our nearby desert area. Many of our club members participate in USTA competition and play in tournaments around the southland. Those players probably already know all the rules, but some of us either never knew or have forgotten some of them. That would include me, so when my first copy of Tennis magazine arrived, I was pleased to find that it has a feature called Court of Appeals that answers readers' questions about tennis rules. For example, and one that has come up on the Four Seasons courts, it explains that if a player happens to swallow a small bug and begins coughing (that's better than licking his lips), it is not a disruption that would hinder the opponents and give them the point. Because the coughing was an "unintentional act," the point could be replayed or, if play continued, the outcome of the play would stand. Occasionally, however, we do take out time for mundane things such as eating. That was the case on Feb. 2 when we carpooled into Redlands and ate at the Buffet Star. We enjoyed a wide variety of American, Chinese, and Japanese food at this all-you-can-eat buffet for a great senior price of $8.07. In other news, we are excited about our new ping pong table. This table replaces one of our damaged tables and will be a real asset to our club. We would love to have you join us in the aerobics room Monday through Saturday at 10:30 am for a lot of fun around the ping pong tables.
