48 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2016 On Tuesday Feb. 9, a farewell luncheon was held at the Lodge for two of our favorite pickleball players. Mo McGowan and Jan Pilkinton will be returning to Denver, Colorado to be near their family and friends; Mo and Jan had lived in Denver for over 30 years. It is rare indeed for people to make such an impact on their community in such a short time, but Mo and Jan did just that. They are the type of people that you just love having for friends; they are kind, caring and funny, and will be truly missed. Good luck ladies; our loss is Denver's gain! A few weeks ago another one of our pickleballers ventured to the birthplace of pickleball, Bainbridge Island, Washington. Janelle von Kleist was born in Seattle which is just a short ferry ride away. She was also able to visit Pickleball Central where many of you have purchased your pickleball equipment. Pickleball was first developed in 1967 and now can boast that there are over 2,460,000 people playing pickleball in over 4,000 sites. The 2015 Nationals fielded over 800 players. In February, nine pickleballers from Four Seasons competed in one of the largest tournaments in California. These are leisurely social times that allow us to enjoy the outdoors on our bikes and then relax and chat over a meal. You can join in on our rides by just showing up in front of the Lodge at 9 am on Thursdays. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 pm in room #1 of the RCN building. We are now starting to plan for some springtime overnight or multi-day trips. Come join us. ~ Howard Lyon Motorcycle Club Water was a hot topic in 2015 and 2016 has started the same with El NiƱo promises/threats dominating weather news. The Take a Hike club selected Lake Perris as our starting point for this year to evaluate our current conditions. Lake Perris is the terminus for California's Grand Canal. Here water collects that was not diverted by farms and communities along its route from Lake Shasta. The recent drought has emptied our northern reservoirs so this rainy winter (up north) has started puddling up behind the dams but not discharging into the canal. Our hike along the water's edge was more than a stone's throw from the northern shores. It was an opportunity to view the detritus or water life and the residue of human "lost overboard" treasures. Herons, kingfishers, ducks and shore birds prowled the reduced lake and a couple of small boats bobbed on the surface. Under a clearing sky, snowcapped Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio shone in the morning sun. It was easy walking on the damp sand, a 2.5 mile long weave past deserted campsites and across empty boat ramps. The bait shop was open and a few hopeful ducks patrolled the area seeking brunch. Trail mix was all we could furnish but was eagerly devoured. At the back end of the reservoir we debated our lunch plans before hitting the paved path back to the parking lot. It was a nice way to start the year as the 15 hikers found the walking easy, the weather comfortable and conversations engaging.
