32 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2016 "In Korea in those days, newborn girls were not deemed important enough to be graced with formal names, but were instead given nicknames, which often reflected the parents' feeling on the birth of a daughter: I knew a girl named Anger, and another called Pity. As for me, my parents named me Regret." And so we are introduced to the main character of this month's Book Club selection, Honolulu by Alan Brennert. In the early 20th century, Jin (as Regret later renames herself ) immigrates to Hawaii as a "picture bride," believing she is going to marry a handsome, affluent man. But life does not go as she hopes and she faces challenges of abuse, poverty, employment and prejudice in a strange, new country. Author Alan Brennert's writing includes a mixture of interesting cultural details of the period and true historic events that provide a broad view of old Honolulu. Among the actual historic events is the Massie trial (1932) in which a white woman was charged with the murder of a Hawaiian man accused of raping her daughter. Honolulu shows the mixed plate of the development of Hawaii. As Jin said, "many different tastes share the plate, but none of them loses its individual flavor, and together they make up a uniquely local cuisine." We'll be meeting Tuesday, April 12, at 9:30 am to discuss Honolulu. Everyone is welcome, whether you have read the book and want to participate, or if you just want to listen. Our May book will be Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands by Chris Bohjalian. The March meeting of the club was a good example. To get us in the mood to explore the different styles of writing, we had a short discussion of "curious idioms" as presented in the March edition of The Breeze written by Len Tavernetti. Members of the club expanded on them and included definitions for "armed to the teeth" and "cat bird seat." Roland Harrah read a new segment of his book, Undeniable Love, to the group. It is a story about meeting his wife in Vietnam and their life there and over the years. His new segment is a story about his first birthday in Vietnam and the cake his mother sent him through the mail. It had been chocolate when it was mailed! John Baeyertz told us the first 40 pages of his science fiction novel had been edited. Some of the club members had reviewed and commented on the first section and the recommendations were discussed. He promised to present the next section at the April meeting. Ed Paules is writing a non-fiction book tentatively titled Who's Accountable, a history of the financial crisis. His specific thesis is that human (political) error causes all economic crashes. Ed's background and his ability to make sense out of reams of data that may result in two books instead of one being written. Ed said "if you can't find the book you want to read – write it!" Why not join our Writers' Club and start to write the book you want to read Don't hesitate to call me if you have any questions at (951) 769-1520. ~ Joseph Laurin Writers' Club Our March meeting was a presentation by Bob Gostischa (a contractor with AVAST) entitled "Technology from a Different Perspective." It started out with a rather humorous look at our lives before and after we became leashed to our technical devices. Bob then went on to give us some hints and cautions to keep us safe in the modern technical world. He discussed identity theft, protecting our devices from security threats, obtaining free credit reports and he supplied us with the names of several free programs which can help our devices run safer and smoother. Our regularly scheduled meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 10:30 am in the Lodge Ballroom. We try to come up with topics of interest to our active adult community and we try to publish those topics in advance so that you can attend those that interest you. On April 12, Eric Zarr will give a presentation on the iPad and iPhone. On May, 10 we will have a Skype presentation about social networking "What the heck are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn?" We hope to see you there. ~Howard Lyon Computer Technology
