68 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2016 | Yvette Karriker, a 20 year resident of Sun Lakes, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 21 at the age of 80. Born in Tucson, Arizona, and spending some of her childhood in Montreal, Canada, she graduated high school in Tucson and moved to California where she attended UCLA. She was mother to beloved daughter Shelli and grandson Brett. She is survived by her children, their spouses and three great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband L.B. Karriker and fiancée Don McGaughey. She retired from Pan Am where she managed the Clipper Lounge at LAX. She had many friends in Sun Lakes and was active in the Big Band Dance, Dinner Dance Club and Friendship Club. Her many friends in Sun Lakes will miss her dearly. Harold "Hal" More, 88, of Sun Lakes, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016 with his loving wife, Marlene, by his side, after enduring a long illness. Born Oct. 28, 1927 in Franklin, PA, Hal was the son of Newell and Mabel Moore and the oldest of three children. He spent his early years in Corsica, PA, and Youngstown, Ohio, where he graduated from Youngstown College with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Following college, Hal served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After active duty he relocated to Burlington, Iowa. He went to work at Burlington Instrument Co., where he met the love of his life, Marlene, at a Christmas party. They were married April 18, 1954. Their 62 year marriage was blessed with three children, eight grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. In the early years, Hal worked as an electrical engineer in Iowa, Texas, Ohio, and Illinois. While in Ohio, he served as president of the Board of Education in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. In 1974 he moved his family to La Canada, CA, and went into electrical meter sales. In later years, he began his own sales representative business. His hobbies included bowling, coin collecting, gardening, playing bridge, and singing in barbershop quartets and the church choir wherever he lived. Following his retirement from Moore Sales, Hal and his wife moved to Sun Lakes Country Club in 1991 where Hal was actively involved as President of the International Culture Club, member of the safety committee and an elementary reading mentor. He served as an elder and a deacon at the Beaumont Presbyterian Church. Hal is survived by his wife, Marlene, daughters Mara (Michael) McCarville and Melissa Moore; son, Michael Moore; grandsons Justin, Chase, Scott, Shane and Alex; granddaughters Katie, Ava and Lilli; and great-grandchildren Preston and Elyse. He is also survived by his sisters Marian and Jane of Ohio. Mamerto (Mike) B. Carrillo passed away Jan. 10, 2016. He was born in the Philippines May 17, 1923. He graduated from Far Eastern University with a degree in business management. He majored in accounting in Manila. During World War II he joined the guerrilla movement at age 18. During liberation time, he guided the U.S. Rangers to his headquarters and was one of those who liberated the 500 American prisoners of war in Cabanatuan City Philippines. He was awarded the bronze star medal by General Douglas MacArthur. After the war he worked for the war damage commission and in Guam as a Navy exchange manager where he gained his U.S. citizenship. He entered the U.S. and worked for Pure Air and became president. He was a master mason and a Shriner of Aloha and al Malaika Temple of Los Angeles for 50 years. He retired to the Palm Valley Country Club and Palm Springs and in 1997 moved to Sun Lakes which he loved best. He was active in square dance, treasurer of dinner dance and an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Macrina. He will be greatly missed. Leigh Kayanna Brownlee passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2016 at the age of 62 and is now home with her Lord and Savior. During her younger years, she lived in various cities in San Francisco Bay Area and Central CA. In the earlier 60s she relocated to Southern California and in 1964 moved into her family home in Bradbury, CA. She attended Duarte High School and during her school year there she found and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She graduated in 1971. In 1975, she met Jim on a sand dune outside of 29 Palms. They were married September 25, 1976 and enjoyed love for over 39 years. In 2005, they moved to Sun Lakes and here she had been active in the knitting club and started up tap dancing. She was a wonderful mother and wife. She loved to help and support people in many ways from contribution to charities to the scarves she knitted for the homeless. She is survived by husband Jim, daughter Jaci, mother Dee Dee, and step-father Tony. She was preceded in death by her daughter Nikki. A beautiful celebration of her life was held on March 5, 2016 at the Beaumont Presbyterian Church. Many friends spoke about how loved and missed she will be, and she is forever in our hearts.
