Pickleball Club | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2016 | 43 Table Tennis/Ping Pong Good exercise! A fun activity! Great people! That's what you'll find with us. Haven't played since you were a kid? Doesn't matter… we have players of all skill levels. We play Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 4 - 6 pm, and Sat., 10 am - 12 noon in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (normally). See the Events Board across from the Main Clubhouse Reception Desk for more information. You can also check on-line at www.sunlakescc.com and click on "Recreation" then click on "Classes," and finally click on "Table Tennis Group." Laced tennis shoes required — no exceptions! Info., Neil, 845-5688 or Bruno, 797-0357. The Spring Tournament is under way, with many new teams enjoying the weather and the game. As with our other tournaments, this is a 10-week tournament. It will end the week of May 23. Play- offs normally begin the following Monday and Tuesday. However, Monday, the 30th is Memorial Day, which pushes the playoffs to Tues., May 31 and Wed., June 1. April 24 is a very special day for Bocce Club members! It's the date of our Pizza Party! For those of you who are new to our club, this is a free party held in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. The menu includes pizza, salad and cookies, along with beer, wine and soda. However, because we need to know how many are coming, we ask you to sign up by putting $3 pp in an envelope with your name/names on the outside. This money buys you 6 tickets for the 50/50 drawing and a name tag! Some of our members are under the impression that the $3 team fee entitles them to the pizza party — not so! The team fee makes you eligible for gift certificates should you win your division. The pizza party fee gives you 50/50 tickets and a name tag at the door. No tag, no food! The doors open at 3:30 pm with a meeting at 4 pm and food at 4:30 pm. The cost is $15 for non-members. As with team entries, all envelopes go to 1288 Pleasant Valley. There is a box at her door. FYI, the color ball your team plays with is determined by your team number. The smaller number is always on the left side of the score sheet and is always black. The higher team number is always yellow. Thus if your team is #1, you will always play with black balls. If you are #2, your team will only play with yellow balls when you play team #1! If your team number is #5, you will play with yellow balls, unless you're scheduled to play team #6 or higher. We didn't realize that many of you hadn't picked up on that. Now you know! Friends of Bocce Our sport is growing nationally and here in Sun Lakes. We have play on most days with new player clinics arranged as needed. The club's "prime time" play hours are Monday/ Wednesday/Friday/Saturday mornings from 8 to 10 am. Members gather on the courts afternoons during the cooler times of year and in the evenings in summer months. The lights on the courts are great! We try to accommodate the skill-levels of all who wish to play. Brand-new players are welcome to join the veterans who are uniformly gracious to beginners. Equipment is provided, just wear court shoes. We also can suggest other times of the week for newer players to learn with others of their skill level. Pickleball is one of a few sports that can be enjoyed by players over a wide range of age and experience. The game uses a slightly higher net than other court-sports to reward finesse over power. Our unique "kitchen" line forms a no- volley zone that also takes away some of the more aggressive play found in tennis. The result is a game truly for all ages! Pickleball tournaments are booming in the southland. Our club members are competing more and more these days and meeting folks from all over the west. Our club can steer you to upcoming events. We look forward to welcoming new players. If you have questions, call club president Royce Newman at 769-1103 or veep Hank Huisman at 712-540-0864. See you on the courts!
