OUR YUCAIPA | APRIL 2016 11 It's a given - everyone has a mom. Some moms are funny, some are angry. Some moms are silly, some are sad. Some moms live in a different home, some live in heaven. Some moms are busy all the time, some are, well, busy all the time… because it's not a cliché — a mom's work is truly never done. When dad says he's going to bed, he brushes his teeth (hopefully) and goes to bed. When mom says she's going to bed, she wipes down the counters in the kitchen, starts the dishwasher, checks the laundry and restarts the dryer, picks up the shoes in the family room, brings the cat inside, checks the kids in their rooms giving one last kiss, shuts down the computer and TV, sniffs the milk for tomorrow's breakfast, preps the coffee pot, washes her face, brushes her teeth, puts lotion on her hands and elbows, then she goes to bed. Then she gets out of bed an hour later checking on a little one's noises that only she heard from a bedroom on the other side of the house. Some say being a mom is the best job you'll ever have. I disagree. It's not a job. It's who you are. You become a mom. It's the new you. Your name changes. Mom. Momma. Mother. Ma. Being a mother is beautiful and heartbreaking and hard and rewarding and painful. It's everything you are and feel. Sometimes, I admit, I dream of getting on a train and disappearing over the horizon. But I don't. Moms stay and suffer failures and celebrate successes. They cry and laugh and love through everything. Even the teen years. We're doing a spotlight on Mother's Day an entire month ahead of time (the date is May 8 this year) so you can plan something special to celebrate the Mom in your life. She loves you every day.
