24 | OCEAN HILLS NEWS | APRIL 2016 | Meeting Times: Please see schedule posted in the Sewing, Etc. room. The Sewing, Etc. website: www.ohccsewing.wix.com/ohccsewing Sewing/Crafts: Our Project Queen, Marcia Bruce, has brought us a new challenge for the winter and spring. She calls it "A New Beginning" and has asked us to start something new. No boundaries or requirements — just decide on something new to start, or something you have been wanting to do, but haven't tried yet. Imagine yourself doing or learning something different. You may be the one to develop a new technique for us to try. March Events: Audrey Henry showed members how to make two travel bags. Members also enjoyed guest speaker Barb Keeling, who discussed her path through her adventures as a craft designer, actor, and writer. April: Marcia Bruce will demonstrate making a hot pad; Kathy Moskovitz will take a mens shirt and turn it into a very clever apron. Beading: Beading Group members work on their own projects, but advise each other when opinions are solicited. Members share their skills when a new technique is to be learned. It is a wonderful environment with experienced and knowledgeable beaders, who share designs and seek input about beading, e.g. good locations to purchase beads, finding pattern books or tools. If you have an interest in creating your very own baubles, bangles or beads (and earrings), do drop by on Tuesdays between 1 and 3 pm to see what our members are doing. Feel free to chat and ask questions of the group. Better still bring a necklace or two that either needs repair or that you would like to restyle. We can make suggestions to help you design a "new" piece of jewelry for your collection. All of us beaders look forward to welcoming and getting to know you, our prospective new members. Do drop by the Sewing, Etc. Room some Tuesday soon. Card Making: The Beginning Card Group continued adding to their skills by making cards using marker pens, decorative cardstock, bling and ink on stamps with water spritzing. The 11 am Card Group assembled a fun Valentine house with Karin B. and finally learned some faux leather techniques from Irma. Lynne H. showed us how to make some cute St. Patrick's Day cards. Rhonda A. showed us how to add color to our embossing paste images. Please join our monthly meeting at 9:30 am on April 3, in the Art Room. Sewing, Etc. We are looking forward to our next meeting on Mon., April 18 at 7 pm in Abravanel Hall when we will show a very interesting film from the Jewish Historical Society and share our own growing-up neighborhood experiences. The film is entitled Meet Me at Brooklyn and Soto and is about the history of the East Los Angeles area called Boyle Heights, starting in the 1920's. Narrated by Harold Gould and produced by Ellie Kahn (a friend of Bonnie Roth's) the film features reminiscences and vintage photographs, preserving a moving chapter in the history of Jewish Los Angeles and the city as a whole. When several of the board members previewed the film, there was an immediate urge to share our own family histories growing up… the stories of grandparents seeking the Goldeneh Medinah, the push by the new immigrants to have their children speak English not the Mama Loshen, the kosher markets with barrels of pickles, family members belonging to the Workmen's Circle, the gradual integration of neighborhoods, and much more. In the absence of our VP, Don Kent, the discussion will be led by Sid Roth. So, please hold the date. Come see the film. Tell us YOUR story! Yiddish Club
