| OCEAN HILLS NEWS | APRIL 2016 | 13 On Tues., April 19, Art Lovers Club members will travel by car to Kit Carson Park in Escondido to view Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden. In the original myth of California as a paradise dating back to 16th century Spain, the beautiful Queen Califia ruled the Californians, a race of black Amazons. According to Kevin Starr, noted Californian historian, California was envisioned as a tropical island filled with gold, jewels and exotic creatures. The Californians were fierce fighters "who rode griffins into battle and fought with golden weapons." Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden is a sculptural rendering of this mythical California. Created by Niki de Saint Phalle, a noted French sculptor, the Garden opened in 2003. It is surrounded by a circular wall of colorful mosaic slithering serpents. The maze entryway is created from black, white and mirrored tiles. The nine sculptures inside include an imposing statue of Queen Califia astride a 15 ft. eagle. The sculptures were fashioned from thousands of individually cut glass, ceramic and stone pieces. After lunch we will visit the Stone and Glass Blowing Gallery also in Escondido and members will have the opportunity to make their own glass ornament.
