30 | OCEAN HILLS NEWS | APRIL 2016 | Commodore Kopolow began the March 1 meeting by introducing Larbi Loucif, who has volunteered to be the club greeter and hand out the name tags for our monthly meetings. Thanks Larbi! Sign ups continued for the Regatta and Awards dinner planned for April 12. Vice Commodore Paloutzian encouraged club members to sign up and get their checks in for the dinner, since on March 5 the dinner was opened to non-Sailing Club members. The dinner will be held at the Southwestern Yacht Club with entrée choices of NY steak, chicken breast or salmon. Cost is $35 for club members and $39 for non-members. A new course has been developed for this year's regatta that will stay within the harbor and involve more tacking than previously. It will start and finish off Shelter Island at a location that is easily accessible to spectators. Several Captains took boats out in March to practice sailing the new course. Six boats are expected to sail in the regatta. The Summer Party is set for Sat., June 11 and this year's holiday party is planned for Sat., Dec. 10. Carol Barry has volunteered to organize the summer party, which will have a "music of the 50s" theme. Volunteers are needed to help with the arrangements. John Misterly announced that the club is looking into arranging a day sail on a three masted schooner out of Long Beach. The sail would take place in late summer or early fall. The business part of the meeting included a vote on changes to the Sailing Club by-laws to conform them to the Ocean Hills Social Clubs by-laws. After a brief discussion, the changes were approved unanimously. The program for the meeting included a presentation by Captain Willem Andersen of a trans-Atlantic sail he took in May to July 1998 from Hilton Head, South Carolina, to Palma de Majorca, Spain. The passage was on the 60' sailing yacht "Sea Fever," and covered 4250 nautical miles. Thanks to Willem for a very interesting and at times amusing account of the voyage. The next Club meeting will be April 5 in Abravanel Hall. Come enjoy the delicious snacks and beverages, sign up for day sails, and learn what future events are planned. Refreshments are served beginning at 7 pm and the business meeting begins at 7:30 pm. Sailing Club
