34 | OCEAN HILLS NEWS | APRIL 2016 | Billiards The Basic Lessons on How to play pool were completed at the end of February. In March, John Mitchell taught "How to Play Eight Ball" and John Prieskorn taught "Eight Ball Strategies." There were also two Eight Ball Tournaments in March. One was just for beginners so they could experience how a pool tournament is run. The other was for the A and B players with a winner for each category. The winners will be noted in May's edition of The News. Also, at the end of March, Tina Malm (billiard professional) presented a pool demonstration along with teaching some pool basics. She also offered personal lessons to individuals for a modest fee, as well as having good pool cues for sale. There will be more on this in May's addition. For April, John Mitchell will offer a lesson on how to break a rack for various games (Eight Ball, Nine Ball, Straight Pool, etc.). Also in April, Don Farmer will give a lesson on "How to Play Billiards Golf," followed a week later by a Billiard Golf Tournament. We look forward to seeing you in the Billiard Room playing, practicing, and learning. Don't forget the Women's Drop-in sessions on Mondays from 1 to 3 pm. Keep a smooth stroke. MATCH PLAY: (A reminder!) Players are asked to arrange their own matches which can be played before or after regular tournaments on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday or any time during the rest of the week. GUYS AND DOLLS: Next two events are April 9 and May 15. Sign up dates for the May tournament are April 10 through May 8. TOURING AMATEURS: PRESS RELEASE! Dave Demerest has signed a sole and exclusive sponsor for the Touring Amateurs with AEGIS at Shadowridge… indefinitely! Next Touring Amateur event is April 25 at Lawrence Welk on the "Fountains Course." No entries accepted after April 15. SPECIAL TOURNAMENTS: First Special Tournament of the year is May 9 to 10 and is sponsored by Fairwinds Ivey Ranch, $8 includes golf, lunch and prizes. Tournament directors are Marilyn Vetlesen and Karen Carrothers. WOMENS GOLF: Ladies golf is sponsoring golf lessons here at OHCC. There will be new classes starting soon covering beginning golf, an overview of the short game, advanced short game and other classes to be determined. Contact Elizabeth Westwater for information at (760) 494-1111. Women and Men golfers are both eligible to attend these lessons. 9ERS GOLF: Played on Tuesdays following the Men's regularly scheduled Tuesday tournament. Play is on the front nine and costs $2 to enter. Prizes are paid out following the event. This is a good way to get to know some new residents, or to just practice your game. This also works if you are attempting to get your first five rounds in for your handicap. Men and Women play on a first come first served basis. Mike and Mina Bell organize the foursomes of those that are present at the first tee box. Come early if you want to set up your own teams. Golf Club
