At nearly 90, Jo still loves to dance and considers it an important part of her life. She says, "I learned to dance when I was 15 by watching and imitating the better dancers. During WW2, I even became good enough to be a hostess at the local USO. When the war was over I met my future husband Bart at a dance. He was very good, and after an evening of dancing together where I followed him step for step, he told me, 'You're a good dancer. I think I'll make you my partner for life.' "He then took me to the most famous and glamorous place in NYC, the Roseland Ballroom. With a gleaming wood floor, mirrored walls, a rotating stage and elegant décor, it was thrilling to dance to the live music of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Xavier Cugat, Tito Puente and many other famous bands. Almost every night we danced three hours straight without a rest. And we entered and won many dance contests there as well." Jo says she's a little slower now, but dancing still takes her away to a magical place where she glides across the floor, moving to beautiful music. And you know she means it by the big smile on her face. Our Summer Fun Dinner Dance will be held Saturday evening, July 23. We'll have the Sklyline Xpress band, and the entrée will be barbecue ribs and chicken. Tickets will be available in June. Enjoy an evening of food, music and dance with us, and with Jo. You don't need a partner and once you learn a few steps, it becomes easier to learn a new dance. Most of line dancing consists of the same 20 to 30 steps with the order rearranged. And dancing is great exercise and easier to do to the beat of the music. You will meet some new, great and helpful people with a common interest. So come on, give it or try or stop by to see how it all works. You might just find a new fun way to get your exercise. The beginning class is from 3-3:45 pm, and the advanced class from 3:45-4:30 pm every Tuesday in the Lodge Ballroom. If you want more information please give me a call: (951) 769-3889. ~ Martha Franck Line Dancing Far left: The landmark Roseland Ballroom opened in 1919 on Broadway and 51st Street in New York City as a spot for "refined dancing."
