FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2016 37 Counter Culture Cinema If you ever wished there were movie theaters closer to the Four Seasons Beaumont that played smaller films, check out our very own Cinema Club which screens these types of films twice each month. Our first May screening, on Sunday, May 8 at 6 pm, nominated for the 2015 academy award for best documentary, is the film, What Happened, Miss Simone? (USA 2015, 101 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "On stage Nina Simone was known for her utterly free, uninhibited musical expression, which enthralled audiences and attracted life-long fans. But amid the violent, haunting, and senseless day- to-day of the civil rights era in 1960s America, Simone struggled to reconcile her artistic identity and ambition with her devotion to a movement. Culled from hours of autobiographical tapes, this new film unveils the unmitigated ego of a brilliant artist and the absurdities of her time. At the height of her fame Simone walked away from her family, country, career and fans, to move to Liberia and give up performing. The story of her life leading up to that event poses the question, how does royalty stomp around in the mud and still walk with grace?'" Our second May screening, on Sunday, May 22 at 6 pm, is the film Dinner Rush (USA 2002, 99 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "Is it just another evening at the hugely popular Italian restaurant of proprietor and bookmaker Louis Cropa in New York. Anything but, as tonight's guests include a local police detective and his wife specially invited by the owner; on the balcony rival bookmaker gangsters from Queens who want to become partners in the restaurant; in the corner renowned food critic 'the food nymph' is her usual demanding self; and at the bar, seemingly unnoticed, is Ken. As the evening continues enter Duncan, inveterate gambler and sous-chef on-the-line in the frenetic kitchen downstairs, who acts as the catalyst that causes the evening to draw to its inevitable, explosive, deadly conclusion." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film. We'd love to have you join us. The Lodge theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early.. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@ gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen We had a great meeting on Monday, April 4. The attendance was super. Keep it up! We are still striving to increase our membership exponentially, so for the next meeting continue to bring friends and neighbors to introduce them to our club. We feel we have much to offer to our members and our community. We invite them to join us to share their expertise, knowledge and friendship, and to enjoy our expertise, knowledge, deeper sense of community, personal growth and pure enjoyment. We have added a special feature to our meetings: Birthdays Celebration of the Month. For the month of April, the birthdays celebration was for Dorothy Cole, Wandell Collins, and Shairon Nevills. The cake and goodies were provided by the Birthday Ladies. Everyone stayed after the meeting to have a glass of wine, cheese and crackers, and of course, the cake. Happy Birthday with a hug and a kiss from us all. Thank you ladies. We are still looking for a chairperson to host our annual Christmas party, if you are interested please let Joyce know. I'll tell you a secret, if you chair you will get lots of volunteers to help. So go for it! Willa Harris is promoting a Motown Show on Aug. 5. Anyone interested in being in the show should contact Willa Harris at (951) 845-2696. The AACC has agreed to assist her in any way we can. The AACC have several events in the planning stages for our community, to inform, educate, or just have fun. Stay turned to our Breeze articles for more information and dates. Our events are always for the enjoyment of all of Four Seasons Community. Our next meeting is on Monday, May 2, at 6 pm in the Lodge Card Room. A thought for the month: "Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: the potential for greatness lives within each of us." ~ Wilma Rudolph. For any additional information please contact Chairperson, Joyce Allen at (951) 769-4354 .
