Info., Neil, 845-5688 or Bruno, 797-0357. It's always difficult to write an article for Lifestyles a month before it will be read. Oftentimes we're caught in the middle of a Tournament, as we are this month. Maybe it's time to address a few things, many of which our members seem to be unaware. First: Any member of the Bocce Club may sub, whether or not they are on the alternate list. If, for some reason, you find yourself NOT on the list that goes out to all members, let Dutch (845-0392) know you want to sub and she will put you on HER list. She manages to keep those on her list very busy! Keep in mind an alternate can only sub once a day, but can sub every day, should he/she be called. Second: Forfeits happen. The team that is to play a forfeiting team must appear at the courts anyway. If the reason for that escapes you, ask Dutch why the rule exists. However, as a courtesy to the referee that is going to work your game, it would be a real help if you, as captain, would notify Dutch that you will not appear. She can then let the scheduled referee know that he/she need not come, particularly if it is he/shes first match. Third: We are working on updating our e-mail list. At this time it should be completed. If you have an email address, but are not receiving alerts from the Bocce Club, please give your address to, who else, Dutch!! Fourth: We're working to get the boards and the carpet on the courts replaced. It has been agreed that they need work. Now the problem is getting it done. Stay tuned! FYI: The Summer Tournament begins the week of June 13th. Entries must be in by June 3; as usual, they go to 1288 Pleasant Valley. There is a box at her door. This is a ten-week season, ending August 18th, with playoffs the following Monday and Tuesday. Play will be at 5, 6, 7, and 8 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and, possibly, Thursday, depending on how many teams enter the Tournament. Hope you had a great time at the Pizza Party! See you on the courts! Friends of Bocce Spring is well under way and the warm weather brings a lot of options for enjoying Pickleball on our lighted courts. The club's scheduled play slots are 8 to 10 am Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The courts are available most afternoons and evenings. POP Tennis has priority on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Afternoons and evenings are great times for casual family play if your grandkids are visiting. The club can loan balls and paddles for such occasions so just call one of the officers below or corral any member during the week. We are seeing many new players giving the game a try. April saw the club's first tournament of the year and the Spring-Fling party, both of which were well-attended. (These articles go to press a month ahead so the results of the tourney can be found on the message board at the courts behind the main pro shop.) If you aren't familiar with the game, check it out online at pickleball.com. There are great YouTube videos as well that allow you to see how the pros play the game. To see how the rest of us do it, drop by the courts some morning. If you have questions, call club President Royce Newman at 769-1103 or Vice President Hank Huisman at (712) 540-0864. See you on the courts! Imagine broccoli and basketball had a baby — that's what this is! We throw balls of broccoli through hoops which land in a basket. The team with the most balls of brocolli in their basket after 120 minutes wins! Obviously there's no dribbling. BYOB. We play Tuesdays on the north side basketball courts at 6 pm. See you then!
