26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2016 | Yiddish Culture Club ICE CREAM SOCIAL: This month the members and guests of the Yiddish Culture Club will travel to the "Heart of the Eastside" during our ice cream social on Wed., June 8, at 7 pm in the South Clubhouse. No, we're not going to The Big Apple. We've already done that this year. We will be armchair travelers to a very special corner in a part of greater Los Angeles. This corner, considered by locals and some historians as the Eastside's premier intersection was once a vibrant place that was the center of the country's biggest Jewish community west of Chicago before World War II and the nation's "largest concentration of people of Mexican descent after it." By now you should have guessed that the corner we will visit, once known as Brooklyn and Soto, is Cesar Chavez Avenue and Soto Street in Boyle Heights. Through this film we will see how a community that had hundreds of people marching in protest of Kristallnacht through the streets in 1938 changed to one where, in 1994, Chicano activists cheered when Brooklyn was formally renamed to honor the longtime president of the UFW union who had recently died. We will learn the history of Boyle Heights, who built it and why the streets were given their names. If you are originally an Angeleno you may already be familiar with the area; with names of familiar businesses such as the Cantor Brothers Deli, Zellman's men's clothing store or even the Breed St. Shul. If you have ever lived in a big city you may remember sitting on stoops and listening to the old men discussing their political viewpoints with vigor and not always in English. Watching this film will help explain how and why this sense of community changed. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge for members. Guest charge is $3 pp. We hope those who knew Boyle Heights will come for the memories and those of us who are "transplants" to Southern California will enjoy the information about this integral part of the Los Angeles area. A New Monthly YCC Event — Movie Night With Friends: Just in time for the 2016 Olympics, the YCC will be presenting Chariots of Fire in the South Clubhouse on Wed., June 29, at 6:30 pm. We will be serving wine, cheese, and crackers. The cost will be $5 pp. Pre paid reservations are necessary and should be sent to Diane Stone, 1800 Litchfield Ct., 769-0130. Flyers available in Main Clubhouse. Everyone is welcome. MEMBERSHIP: Let's get a head start on membership dues for our year beginning July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. Those renewing with no changes in email, address or phone number may just drop your check in the box at 5826 Lake Buena Vista Way, bring it to the meeting, or call Pat Corrall, membership chair, at 769-0957 who will pick it up. New membership forms are available with YCC information in Main Clubhouse lobby. All those paying by June 15 will be eligible for the drawing of a $25 prize. We're looking forward to another great year! Calling all men! Does the "Heart of your Heart" inspire you to sing? Do you long to call your sweetheart in song? If so, then you should check out the Sun Lakes Men's Barbershop Chorus. No prior singing experience necessary, just a willingness to listen, learn, and join in. We are a group of amateurs like yourself who enjoy singing and having fun. We meet every Wednesday morning at 9 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. For details contact Harry Kaylor at 845-8054. Come join us! Barbershop Chorus Our recent RV rally was a great success! We all had a great time. The club welcomed six members. Trail boss Ken Hurley surprised the members with a drawing for beautiful Easter baskets. Everyone played bocce ball and golf. The weather was great in Goodyear, Arizona during our rally. The club is planning our Moab, Utah rally. It will be Sept. 14-20. Bill and Blanca McDade will be our trail bosses. This is a very unique and interesting area. If you like RV travel, enjoy the company of good friends, and like fun times in beautiful settings, we welcome you to join our club. Activities include bocce ball, golf, beanbag baseball and more. We have some planned meals so that we can be together with our members, and some free time so that we can explore the areas we visit. If you are interested in joining our club, attending a rally as a guest, or just interfacing with some great people, please contact John and Peggy Andrews at 845- 8295 or email peggasus28@dc.rr.com or John and Phyllis Janicki at 755-7441.
