68 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2016 | Josef Mueller, a 22 year resident of Sun Lakes, passed away on April 20 at the age of 86 from medical complications after a stroke. Josef was born to German parents in Batschka Palanka, Yugoslavia. During World War II, he and his family had to flee their home, and after the war they found themselves in a refugee camp in Stuttgart Germany. It was in Stuttgart that Josef met Regina Bachert. Josef and Regina married in 1954 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1955. For a few years, they lived in Reading, Pennsylvania. In 1958, Josef and Regina came to California so that Josef could be the best man at the wedding of Regina's cousin, Karl to his wife Mary. They were so impressed with California that they packed up their belongings and moved to California. They lived briefly in Los Angeles and then bought a home in Alhambra where they raised their two daughters, Monica and Annette. Josef worked for many years as a union carpet installer during which time he had the opportunity to work for several celebrities including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cher, Steven Spielberg, Muhammad Ali, and John McEnroe. After retiring, Josef and Regina moved to Sun Lakes where they enjoyed traveling and being members of the German American Club of Beaumont. Josef and Regina were married for 48 years until Regina passed away in 2002. Josef later met Nancy Dickason, a Sun Lakes resident. They enjoyed taking cruises, bowling, the International Culture Club, and being members of the Crazy 8's Dinner Club. They had eight years together until Nancy passed away in 2011. In 2014, Josef had the good fortune to meet Norma Porter, also a Sun Lakes Resident. They enjoyed dancing together at the Big Band Dances and being members of the Paisano Club. Josef took pride in being handy and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those around him. Josef is survived by his two daughters Monica (Mark) and Annette (Thomas).
