14 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | June 2016 | Question: What are some easy steps a person can take to stop smoking? You already know smoking is bad for you, in fact, it's the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. But did you know, according to the National Cancer Institute, those who stop smoking, reduce their risk of developing lung cancer by up to 50% after 10 years? You also lower your risk of emphysema, heart disease and more. If you are ready to kick the habit, here are eight simple ways to help. Get Support: Numerous studies show that getting the support of friends, family, a therapist and/or quitters makes you more likely to be successful. Forget "Cold Turkey": Only 3 - 6 percent of people who try to quit cold turkey are successful. One reason is that cigarettes can be both a physical and mental addiction. Try using nicotine gum, lozenge or patch, available in drug stores. Gum and lollipops can help too. Accept Imperfection: Slip up and sneak a cigarette after work? Don't let one small mistake lead to total defeat. Tomorrow is a new chance to be smoke free! Snack on These: A recent Duke University survey found that eating fruits and vegetables can actually make cigarettes taste bad, acting as a natural deterrent. Sign Up for a Dance Class: Or any physical activity you think sounds fun. Studies have shown that being active can reduce nicotine cravings and boosts levels of feel good hormones. Take Time Out to Reduce Stress: Stress is one of the top reasons people relapse and few things are more stressful than trying to quit smoking. So make sure to take some time out for yourself. Usually Smoke After Eating?: Start carrying a toothbrush and excuse yourself to the bathroom after eating. It can replace the ritual of smoking and the minty taste of the toothpaste will make smoking seem less desirable. You will smell better too. Ask About Medications: Tried other methods and just can't seem to quit? Ask about medications. There are multiple prescription-only options available. While effective, many do have side effects, so be sure your care provider explains all the pros and cons.
