| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2016 | 47 Pickleball Club The Summer Tournament is well under way with 66 teams. We are playing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, beginning at 5 pm. If you're looking for something to do one evening, drop by the courts on the north side, across from the NCH, and sit a spell. The competition is lively and the participants are, usually, friendly! The winners of the Spring Tournament are: AA-Angie and Jerry Mills; Tanya and Mike Macarewich. A-Joy Bailey, Sue Crowe, Frank Otten (sub) and Bruce Herwig (sub). Bob and Marla Heinrich were absent. B-Mary Lou Hambelton, Margaret Chase, Kristi Herring and Helen Belcher. Congrats to all! There seems to be some confusion regarding who can and who can't sub. ANY CLUB MEMBER can sub as long as he/she is NOT playing on a team. His/her name does NOT have to be on the Alternate list. Again, if you are on a team, you CANNOT sub for any team. Hopefully, this will help answer some of the questions we get. This is being written the first week in June, between the Spring and Summer Tournaments. The sideboards on the courts were removed today. Hooray! The finishing crew is due in tomorrow, June 7. Darn! I had a great paragraph written, until today, about our response should the boards not be replaced during the break. It was suggested that the club march, enmasse, to the Maintenance office and stamp our collective feet! Can you just imagine?!! Ah, well! Have a safe and happy summer. See you on the courts! Friends of Bocce The big news this month is that pickleball members have been denied access to the courts on the three weekday eight o'clock morning slots the Master Board designated for POP use. In fact, the courts are now off-limits to all Sun Lakes residents wishing to play pickleball at those times. The Club was informed of this on June 2. We have never sought "exclusive" play hours as a club. We don't believe that is a proper use of Sun Lakes facilities. When we don't fill all three courts we have always welcomed POP to use the vacant court or courts. We have felt free to do likewise on their scheduled days. The Master Board has decreed otherwise and our members need to be aware of the new rules so that we all comply. This means our prime club play-days are now Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 8 to 10 am. No matter how many courts are unoccupied on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8, pickleball may not be played — by anyone. If you are playing earlier in the day on those mornings, please be sure the nets are down and the courts cleared by 8 am. We encourage members to get together late mornings, afternoons and evenings when courts are available on a first-come-first-served basis. As summer heats up, evenings will be popular times to play. See you on the courts!
