The program for the month of July will be a speaker from the Master Gardener Program in Riverside. They will be sharing information about controlling insects in our area. In August, Judy Stevens, The Butterfly Lady, will be speaking about the Monarch Butterflies. Both programs should be very interesting. TRIP #1: July 19 will find us traveling to the Oak Glen Preserve on the Riley's Los Rios Property in Oak Glen. Cost is $35 pp which includes the bus, tip, and donation. Lunch is on you own at Los Rios Café or bring lunch. Bus will leave at 9 am from the bus room. Bus room will open at 8 am. TRIP #2: July 28 travel to Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens in Fallbrook. $88 includes bus, tip, garden tours, Plantation House and plantings to take home. Lunch included. Organic lunch of soup, salad, Myrtle Berry Pie. Bus leaves at 8:30 am, returns at 3:30 pm. All checks to be made out to Garden Club. Questions on both trips, call Evelyn at 845-7199. Garden Club 22 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2016 | Chorale SUN LAKES CHORALE REORGANIZES: Dorothy Lewis has been selected to serve as Interim President of the Chorale of Sun Lakes for the remainder of 2016. Jim Searcy will serve as vice-president pro-tem. Both new officers bring a wealth of organizational abilities to the Chorale Board. Retired from Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena, Dorothy was director of their Hospitality and Restaurant Management Program. Jim Searcy, newly elected to the Sun Lakes Master Board, had been president of an HOA board in Las Vegas, and was on the board of directors in a community similar to ours in Aurora, CO. These new officers join the existing Chorale board of directors, which includes secretary Peggy Huetten, treasurer Donna Kissling, and historian Tony Suydam. A Chorale picnic is planned for Sat., July 2, at 1 pm in the North Clubhouse. After lunch, members will adjourn to the bocce courts across the street for some enjoyable team-building games. More information will be forthcoming via email and in Sun Lakes Life. Let's get pickled! Happy Cookers will have a fun program in July. Members will bring a variety of foods that have been pickled. Did you think it would be just cucumbers? Wrong! In conjunction with the Recreation Department, Happy Cookers proudly presents a unique excursion to Shields Date Farm. We will enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet and then tour the farm at our leisure. We may even learn about the sex life of a date. Got your attention? Afterward, there will be a docent tour of Cabot's Pueblo Museum. Please join us in this fun and educational outing on Wed., Sept. 21. The bus leaves at 7:30 am. Cost per person is $45. Happy Cookers gave two $500 scholarships to (1) Kalin Rodriquez; and (2) Olivia Leon. Kalin Rodriquez is going to Johnson and Wales University. She wants to be a pastry chef. Olivia Leon will be attending CIA (Culinary Institute of America) in Healdsburg, CA. Her goal is to be a personal chef or food critic.
