FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2016 37 Counter Culture Cinema It's that time of year – the big summer blockbusters are hitting the theaters. If you ever wished there were movie theaters closer to the Four Seasons that played smaller films, check out our Cinema Club which screens these films twice each month. Our first monthly screening, on Sunday., July 10 at 6 pm, is the film Defending Your Life (USA 1991, 112 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "Yuppie Daniel Miller is killed in a car accident and goes to Judgment City, a waiting room for the afterlife. During the day, he must prove in a courtroom-style process that he successfully overcame his fears (a hard task, given the pitiful life we are shown). At night, he falls in love with Julia, the only other young person in town. Nights are a time of hedonistic pleasure, since you can (for instance) eat all you want without getting fat." Our second monthly screening, on Sunday., July 24 at 6 pm, is the film, The Outrageous Sophie Tucker (USA 2014, 96 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "A documentary focusing on the tumultuous early days of this iconic vaudeville superstar who ruled the 1920s Flapper Era in the U.S. Before Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Midler, Madonna and Lady Gaga, Tucker was the first woman to infatuate her audiences with a bold, bawdy and brassy style unlike any other previous performer. Using all of The Last of the Red Hot Mama's 400+ recently rediscovered personal scrapbooks, authors Susan and Lloyd Ecker take you on their seven year journey retracing Tucker's 60-year show business career." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen Happy 4th of July. We are planning a fun morning with food, drinks, and games. Everyone in the community was invited to attend. I will give you an update in the next Breeze.
