OUR YUCAIPA | JULY 2016 19 Ming is a mother, a survivor and a loving cat. Ming came to YAPS as an owner surrender. She was very pregnant and her owner was ready to put her down. YAPS fortunately had a spot available for Ming and we gave her a comfy place to give birth. She stayed with her kittens until they were weened and now all of them have been adopted except for Ming. She is spayed and up- to-date on her vaccines. She is just under 2 years old and enjoys talking with people that come to visit in the cattery. For more information on Ming or any other of her friends at Yucaipa Animal Placement Society call (909) 790-1440 or email info@yaps.org. She has a natural attraction to colors black and white. YAPS has many wonderful dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens available for adoption. The animals come from a variety of sources, such as those from owners than can no longer keep them, or from the transfer of animals from public shelters to relieve overcrowding and the possibility of euthanasia. All of the animals have received medical care, spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations and a microchip. YAPS does a thorough assessment of the animal's temperament and needs to ensure proper placement. The goal is to adopt out animals into permanent, loving homes. YAPS was founded by Betty Martines in 1957. At that time, homeless dogs and cats were wandering the streets of Yucaipa with nowhere to go, except to Betty's home. YAPS was born out of Betty's great concern for their welfare, and her desire to save these animals from certain death, the ultimate goal being to place them into loving homes, therefore a vision for a no kill shelter was born. YAPS incorporated in 1973 as a 501C-3 non-profit organization, with the help and support of Betty's husband Jim. Together they worked tirelessly to find a donated piece of property or at least one they could afford to see their dream come true. They finally met with the County of San Bernardino, who generously agreed to lease three acres of land on 13th Street for a dollar a year to YAPS, an agreement that continues to this day. A shelter was built on Sept. 29, 1983, at its current location on 13th street. Since then the shelter has had several directors all who have made a lasting impression on the shelter and the animals it serves, creating new programs to help pets and their people, in addition to maintaining the old ideals of the past. Community members regularly volunteer and are invited to brighten the day of one of the dogs that are awaiting a new home at the YAPS Wag'n Walks. Volunteers take the dogs into Chapman Heights behind the YAPS facility and go for a walk of approximately 1.5 miles. The walk start promptly at 8:30 am and lasts about an hour. Please wear sunscreen, bring water for yourself and wear comfortable shoes. Walks will be held the following Saturdays, weather permitting: July 9 and 23, Aug. 13 and 27, Oct. 22, and Nov. 12. Participants are encouraged to arrive by 8 am. For more information on the walks please contact YAPS at info@yaps.org or call (909) 790-1440. YAPS is located at 11937 13th Street in Yucaipa. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. For more information call (909) 790-1440.
