| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2016 | 47 Pickleball Club The new sideboards on the courts seem to be working well. Unfortunately, they continue to leave colored marks on the balls. We've ordered new balls, but hesitate to start using them until we can solve the 'marking' problem. The deadline for entering the Fall Tournament is Aug. 26. Play begins the week of Sept. 6, however the 6th is Labor Day. The Monday teams will play their first matches on the 13th. We will go to a split schedule, beginning the first few weeks at 5, 6, 7, and 8 pm, changing to the earlier schedule, 3, 4, 5, and 6 pm, as the weather cools off. Your schedules will reflect the change. The Fall Tournament ends the week of Nov. 10 with playoffs beginning the week of Nov. 14. There is a good possibility that we will have to go to Thursday again this Tournament, given the number of teams that sign up. If Thursday works for your team, include it as one of your choices. BTW, we realize that sometimes your team simply can't give a second choice, but it makes our Tournament Chair's life a whole lot easier if a second choice is included! Entries go to 1288 Pleasant Valley. There is a box on the door. If you have already played a tournament in 2016 and your team remains the same, there is no need to fill the little card out again. Just put the $12 team fee in an envelope, write the names on the outside, indicate your choice of days and turn it in. A new card needs to be filled ONLY at the beginning of a new year OR if your team has a change of personnel. Any questions, call Dutch at 845-0392. Friends of Bocce Our sport is growing nationally and here in Sun Lakes. We played on most days with new player clinics arranged as needed. The Club's "prime time" play hours are Monday/Wednesday/Saturday mornings from 8 to 10 am. Members gather on the courts afternoons during the cooler times of year and in the evenings in summer months. The lights on the courts are great! We try to accommodate the skill-levels of all who wish to play. Brand-new players are welcome to join the veterans who are uniformly gracious to beginners. Equipment is provided, just wear court shoes. We also can suggest other times of the week for newer players to learn with others of their skill-level. Pickleball is one of a few sports that can be enjoyed by players over a wide range of age and experience. The game uses a slightly higher net than other court- sports to reward finesse over power. Our unique "kitchen" line forms a no-volley zone that also takes away some of the more aggressive play found in tennis. The result is a game truly for all ages! Pickleball tournaments are booming in the Southland. Our club members are competing more and more these days and meeting folks from all over the west. Our club can steer you to upcoming events. We look forward to welcoming new players. If you have questions, call club president Royce Newman at 769-1103 or veep Hank Huisman at (712) 540-0864. See you on the courts
