Recently some homeowners have reported unwanted visitors on their property. This had nothing to do with the homeless or vendors rapping on the door, it had to do with Sun Lakers. The reports had to do with people entering their property and taking fruit from their trees. Yes, they would actually open the gate and enter their back yard and pick fruit from the trees. A couple of the residents were older, single women and afraid to confront the invader. These is not the Sun Lakers we know and say hello to and wave at on a daily basis, is it? This is not the first time we have had reports of thievery in our complex. Not long ago a resident broke into the closet in the South Clubhouse and stole six new microphones valued at $200 each. Then, years back someone walked off with a tea set on the stage in the Ballroom during a Drama Club practice. Don't forget the gentleman caught walking out of the Library with a potted tree in his hands. When confronted, he stated, "I need this at home to decorate my living room, besides, I own these things!" We no longer leave cabinet doors open since on numerous occasions residents were stopped from carrying out arm loads of toilet tissue and Kleenex. Be watchful, if you have a party in the Ballroom or one of the other rooms in our clubhouses, of who walks through the door. There are residents who will walk in and fill their bags or pockets with whatever might be on your tables. It happened to the city of Banning. They arranged a breakfast meeting at Sun Lakes. A few residents walked into the Ballroom and walked off with cartons of orange juice and rolls. The Golf Shop is no exception. Years back I had a wedge in for repair. Before it could be worked on, it disappeared. I'm sure it is not the first time it happened and probably will not be the last. Some of the older residents will recall that K-Mart had a list of Sun Lakers who were not welcome in their store having been caught pocketing merchandise. Here is a fair warning! All of our key locations in the clubhouses have security cameras mounted in the common rooms. Be careful — YOU DON'T WANT TO BE ON CANDID CAMERA! DELEGATE ASSEMBLY REPORT Joe Formino, Chairman, District Delegate Assembly 6 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2016 | REMEDIES TO DEAL WITH GOPHERS The Operations department has heard from several residents looking for advice to prevent gophers from making their home in your yard. We've gathered a few home remedies from the website "Home Remedies Hack," www.homeremedyhacks.com, that suggests natural ways of using the gopher's sensitivity to scents, as a deterrent. Pet Waste Gophers detest offensive scents so one popular way to get rid of gophers is using pet waste. Rather than throwing away your dog's poop or cat's litter into the waste, use it to block gopher tunnels and mounds. Coffee Grounds Sprinkle your used coffee grounds in the gopher openings. Now, cover the holes with soil. In addition, spread some grounds all around the garden area. This will not only drive off the gophers, but also enhance the fertility of the soil, and at the same time, make your garden pest-free. Dryer Sheets The dryer sheets are used by many people to toss in their clothes for spongy, pleasant smelling laundry. These sheets can be used as a gopher repellent. Gophers detest the smell of strong scents that are present in dryer sheets. This is an inexpensive way to solve the gopher problem. Simply place a few dryer sheets into the gopher holes and cover them with soil. Tabasco Sauce Mix 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce, ½ cup castor oil and a few drops of peppermint oil in 1 cup of water. Shake well. Immerse cotton balls in this emulsion and put them into the gopher holes. It will keep the gophers away from your garden. Please note — we recommend using gloves and a face mask while working with and applying the remedies and keep your beloved pet away for their safety. We hope you find these suggestions helpful. ~ Mark Schleiden, Director of Operations
