FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2016 37 Counter Culture Cinema We're happy to bring you a couple of very well-reviewed smaller films this month that you may not have caught in theaters when they were first released: Our first monthly screening, on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 6 pm, is the film The Lady in the Van (UK 2015, 1 hour 44 min, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb. com: "The Lady in the Van tells the true story of Alan Bennett's strained friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman whom Bennett befriended in the 1970s before allowing her temporarily to park her Bedford van in the driveway of his Camden home. She stayed there for 15 years. As the story develops, Bennett learns that Miss Shepherd is really Margaret Fairchild (died 1989), a former gifted pupil of the pianist Alfred Cortot. She had played Chopin in a promenade concert, tried to become a nun, and was committed to an institution by her brother, escaped, had an accident when her van was hit by a motorcyclist for which she believed herself to blame, and thereafter lived in a fear of arrest." Our second monthly screening, on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6 pm, is the film, 45 Years (UK 2015, 95 min, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "A married couple preparing to celebrate their wedding anniversary receives shattering news that promises to forever change the course of their lives." All of our screenings are followed by a lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subjected to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen Summer is swiftly passing by. I hope you are taking full advantage of summer and our facilities, to enjoy it with your families, neighbors, and friends. We had our Juneteenth Celebration on June 18 at the Summit and it was a rousing success. The men from the Dominoes Club, with Wondell Collins' help, fully supported us. We had hot dogs, links, hamburgers, and turkey burgers grilled by "Chef Solomon Hayes." Solomon did a superb job! The meats were grilled to perfection. And of course, Greg Lee, was beyond helpful by helping us set everything up that morning. We are indebted to both of them for all their help. They were both invaluable in making our event so successful. Our sincere thank you. We also had all kinds of delicious foods… salads, baked beans, collard greens, corn bread, fruit salads, cakes, pies, and cookies, etc. supplied by the AACC and Dominoes Club members. The food was in abundance and so delicious. I have always said we have the best members. You confirmed it, you are the greatest! Betty Ann James gave us a history lesson on how Juneteenth came about and some important tidbits on Black History. Thank you, Betty Ann. We were informed, ate, socialized, talked, played cards, games, and of course dominoes. It was an absolutely fantastic day. Our next outing is "Pageant of the Masters" in Laguna Beach on Aug. 5. We are sold out. I will give you a report in our next article. We will celebrate our August and September birthdays in September, since we will not have a meeting in August. As always we invite your to join us and share in this vibrant group. We are constantly looking for ways to make our experience at Beaumont Four Seasons more meaningful and enjoyable for all our community. Our next meeting will be the second Monday in September at 6 pm at the Lodge in the Card Room. Please come and look us over. We are always looking for new members to help us make our goals a reality. If you would like more information, please call Joyce Allen, Chairperson, at (951) 769-4354. ~ Roxie Elliott African American Culture Club Members enjoying the AACC Juneteenth
