42 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2016 Racquet Club Our June Play Day did not have a lot of players, but the ones who were there played well and a lot. Afterwards, the players and guests enjoyed a FSBRC-hosted lunch at the Summit, where in addition to the victuals, they relaxed and talked tennis, including their predictions about the then forthcoming championships, known on this side of the ocean as Wimbledon. Nobody predicted that Novak Djokovic would get defeated by American Sam Querrey and make an early Brexit. Maybe the Play Day turnout was low because earlier in the week a large contingent of FSBRC player and friends ventured over to Sun Lakes to participate in their annual Charity Week tennis tournament. Though we helped them raise some dough for the Pass Area charities, they pretty much flattened us like a pizza crust, New York style, in the competition. One match that our side did win was a nip and tuck struggle in which our mixed doubles team of Larry Martin and Padoo Peralta ultimately prevailed. But the main goal was to help out the charitable activities and to play some tennis with our neighbor club. So, it was a success. Speaking of success, this year it was the Red team that triumphed in the annual Independence Day Red-Blue team competition. With the outcome still in doubt when the final doubles teams took the court before a dwindling audience, Red Team Captain Howard Lyon and partner Victor Flores just managed to save the day for the Reds by scratching out three of the 12 games against Syed Ali and Steve Hovey to give the Red team 100 games, with Blue falling short with 96. In addition to Howard and Victor, the Red team included Chuck Beckman, Richard Carrasco, Bernadette Martin, Howard Levine, Lyle Cameron, and Padoo Peralta. Padoo also was the top woman player with a total of 16 wins, repeating last year's feat. With 18 wins, Syed Ali was the top male player. Barbara Miller continues to coordinate evening doubles play on the second and third Thursday of each month at 6 and 7, good times to play short sets as the weather heats up. As always, FSBRC holds a Play Day on the last Saturday of the month, beginning at 8:30 am, and all residents are welcome to come out for some social tennis.
