56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2016 The autumnal equinox is once more approaching and with it the convergence of several major sports events. Baseball will be a month away from its World Series. Football (American Style) will be engaging in its third game of the regular season. NBA basketball will still be six weeks away, but it too has its auspicious start in the fall of the year. But none could be more highly anticipated than, drum roll please, the Paddle Ball 2016 US Open. What? Never heard of such an event? What? Just another sports activity of which to be blissfully ignorant? No, no, heavens no. This is the US Open after all. This is the famed event to be played out in our own backyard. This is what we call Venice Beach, right? Even now paddle players from our own Four Seasons are lining up the carpools to attend the great event. So why, we might ask, is there such great attraction to see the world's greatest athletes compete? Are we secretly living our fantasies through their achievements? Are we mesmerized by watching the seemingly impossible shot? I suppose many of us have long since recognized that we will never become world class athletes, but the fact that we can still play can in itself be a whimsical joy. All are welcome to join us on the paddle courts. We may not be US Open qualifiers, but we will always be Open Four Seasons. ~ Perry White Racquet Club To paraphrase Snoopy, it was a dark and stormy day, so we canceled our July Play Day. You may recall that the weather that day was extremely windy with swirling gusts stirring up dust, dirt, pine needles and lawn furniture. Additionally, the day was overcast with threatening thunderclouds and all the sticky humidity of a sauna. So, the weather was bad enough for us to cancel the club's monthly Play Day, because nobody in their right mind would be out on the courts under those conditions. Richard Carrasco and Rick Loney, who apparently don't have email or the Weather Channel, actually did go to the courts to play. As they were the only two to think that was a good idea, they had to play singles. Though we didn't have the Play Day, Barbara Miller continues to organize the Thursday night social tennis with starting times at 6 pm, 7 pm and 8 pm, on the second and third Thursdays of each month. Contact Barbara and she will arrange mixed or men's doubles for the interested players. If you are interested, let Barbara know the Sunday before, and she will match folks up. As the other players will be counting on a match, please keep your commitment to play, barring unforeseen circumstances. Another playing opportunity is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 8:30 on Court 2. Come on out and fill out a foursome or rotate in if there are more players. For those of you who want to watch the world's top professional men and women tennis players at the PNB Paribas Open in Indian Wells, ticket packages are now on sale on their website. The tournament will be held from March 6 through the 19th. Single day tickets will be on sale at a later date. Club members, if you are interested in providing input to the Club's Committee, or just want to watch what goes on, please attend a Committee meeting on any third Tuesday of the month at 4 pm. Do not be afraid; you won't be elected to anything without your permission. Weather permitting, there will be a Play Day starting at 8:30 am on the last Saturday of the month. All tennis playing residents are welcome to come out and play. Our website: www.fsbrc.org. ~ Steven Hovey Paddle Tennis A few Four Season's Paddlers having lunch at Ruby's Annual Hamburger Special
