| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2016 |27 Let's hope this month ends the heat and humidity and we can look forward to cooler weather in the near future. Our next meeting and caregiver support group will meet on Thurs., Sept. 15 at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. We do not have a guest speaker this month so you will have more time for the support group. It is so important to attend these support group meetings. We learn so much from sharing our experiences with each other. Our patient group meets in the Arts and Craft Room. This group is designed to help you, the caregiver. Just drop your loved one off and go on to the meeting. Enjoy the meeting and support group knowing your loved one is well taken care of and having fun. We play games, do exercises, have entertainment and do just about anything your loved one wants. Our volunteers are loving and caring. This month Ray Rendon will entertain us. Ray entertains under the name Ray the Entertainer (music in the style of the crooners of the 40s and 50s). We are so grateful for these visits. Also thank you to Susan Brown for not only singing for us last month but for spending so much time getting to know each one of the people in our group. Thank you Roger Smith for bringing Jade your service dog to visit with us. Or shall I say Jade, thank you for bringing Roger by. Jade has so much personality! If you have any questions about the meeting, support group or patient group, call Anne at 845-8700 or Diane at 769-0130. We are here to help you. We also have reading material we can loan you. Give Joanie a call at 769-1386. Continuing with 50 things you should know about Alzheimer's disease, here are numbers 44, 45 46 and 47. #44 Caregiver support groups can help. #45 It is important for caregivers to eat right, exercise and get enough rest. #46 All caregivers need help. #47 Caregivers can get help from other family members, friends or community organizations. Memory Care Group An unusual act is coming to the Friendship Club on Sept. 10. Jason Garfield is a juggler and entertainer, and also founder and president of the World Juggling Federation. His stage performance is a mixture of stand-up comedy and outstanding juggling routines. Jason was born in Connecticut, and grew up in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle. His older brother was the first to discover juggling, but it was 11-year-old Jason who mastered the art, and set his goals on competitive juggling (who knew?). At age 13, Jason won the International Juggler's Association Junior Competition in Denver, Colorado. After that, he returned to Seattle and became a street performer. By the age of 15, he was practicing three hours a day to prepare for future competitions. When he was 22, Jason accepted a job performing at the Ohio State Fair. Surpassing his earlier skill level, he juggled 10 balls at one time, and then tied the Guinness World Record for 11 balls. Returning to competitive juggling, he won the Seniors Competition. Since then, he's been working on cruise ships, and has become one of the best original acts around. Sharing the evening with Jason will be Barry Minniefield, a 53-year-old Palm Springs singer who won the Blind Audition on "The Voice" in 2015. Barry first became interested in music while attending church with his grandmother, but after high school, singing took a backseat when he discovered his love of cooking. He moved to Los Angeles and began a 10-year career as a professional chef. As the executive chef at the Improv Comedy Club, he started singing karaoke for fun, and his passion for music returned. He became known as "Hollywood's Singing Chef," performing or cooking for Roseanne Barr, Tom Arnold, Cher, Jay Leno, Arsenio Hall, Nancy Wilson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oprah Winfrey, and Robin Williams. In 1990, he decided to focus on his music. "When I began singing with bands, I picked up percussion instruments and started filling in when others played their solos." Minniefield has also acted in productions of Romeo and Juliet, Bye Bye Birdie and Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as numerous commercials. Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-resident guests. Doors open at 6 pm, show begins at 7 pm. Make checks out to Friendship Club, and deliver them to 5168 Rio Bravo Drive. For cancellations and information, call Pat (845-3789) or Judy (797-0265).
