FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2016 39 Counter Culture Cinema We're happy to bring you a couple of very well-reviewed smaller films this month that you may not have caught in theaters when they were first released: Our first monthly screening, on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 6 pm, is the film Stuck in Love (USA 2012, 1 hour 37 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "Meet the Borgens. William Borgens is an acclaimed author who hasn't written a word since his ex-wife Erica left him three years ago for another man. In between spying on Erica and casual romps with his married neighbor Tricia, Bill is dealing with the complexities of raising his teenage children Samantha and Rusty. Samantha is publishing her first novel and is determined to avoid love at all costs - after all, she's seen what it has done to her parents. Rusty is an aspiring fantasy writer and Stephen King aficionado who is on a quest to gain 'life experiences.' Stuck in Love is a tale of family, love (lost and found), and how endings can make new beginnings." Our second monthly screening, on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 6 pm, is the film Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles (USA 2014, 1 hour 31 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "Magician looks at the remarkable genius of Orson Welles - the enigma of his career as a Hollywood star, a Hollywood director and a crucially important independent filmmaker. Orson Welles' life was magical: a musical prodigy at age 10, a director of Shakespeare at 14, a painter at 16, a star of stage and radio at 20, romances with some of the most beautiful women in the world. His work was similarly extraordinary, most notably Citizen Kane, created by Welles when he was only 25. In the years following Citizen Kane, Welles' career continued to change as he made film after film and acted in other projects often to earn money in order to keep making his own films." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen We had a great time at the Pageant of the Masters. Our group chartered a bus that picked us up and returned us to our parking lot. The bus driver was excellent. We were all pleased that none of us had to fight the traffic. The hassel-free drive would have been a great start, but it only got better as the evening progressed. We got there early enough to have dinner before the show started. The weather was pleasant and added to our wonderful experience. The show was spectacular. It is something you have to see yourself to understand the "magic." The portraits depicted dated back to early America. The still-life actors were phenomenal. You could not tell who was real and who was not. The finale was a depiction of The Last Supper. It was great! I hope we do it again next year. Thank you Johnetta for chairing this project. You did a superb job! As you have noticed by now, our October event is the license plate frames fundraiser. We hope everyone in the community buys and displays their license plates frames proudly. We think our community is great and want to let everyone know, especially Sun Lakes (smile.) Wouldn't it be great if we had 100 percent participation. The money from the fundraiser will be put back into our community to help a local charity, as well as sponsor activities and events for us, Four Seasons Beaumont, for free or at minimal cost. So be sure to stop at the Lodge and show your support. We all benefit! We sell the license plate frames at the Lodge on Tuesdays 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, Wednesdays 12 to 3 pm and Fridays 4 to 7 pm, until frames are sold out. So hurry don't get left out. Lastly, we are working frantically on our annual Christmas gala on Dec. 10. The theme is "Soulful Christmas" and the entertainment is going to be awesome. Everyone in the community is invited; if you enjoyed the Motown event you will love "Soulful Christmas." The entertainment is a professional group performing the classic soul Motown music. Tickets will be on sale at the Lodge on Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. For more information or additional times to buy tickets, contact Shirley Caldwell at (951) 769-0014. The AACC is moving forward. Come and join us. We meet on the first Monday of the month at 6 pm at the Lodge in the Game Room. For more information contact Joyce Allen at (951) 769-4354 or Roxie Elliott (951) 769-2517. ~ Roxie Elliott African American Culture Club Dinner at Pageant of the Masters (l-r): Cookie &Ralph Bonner, Shairon Nevills, Wanda Valentine, Ester Mogel, Roxie Elliott
