54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2016 | Pickleball Club The Fall Tournament is well under way. We are about to switch to the earlier times of 3, 4, 5, and 6 pm. Now we hope the weather cooperates! We have 87 teams playing on four days this tournament. It ends the week of Nov. 10, with playoffs Nov. 14 and 15. That will end bocce for 2016, although the courts are always open and balls available in the cabinet through the holidays. Enjoy! Sun., Oct. 23, is the date of our annual Italian Dinner. Be sure to mark your calendars. We will dine on a variety of pasta dishes, salad, rolls and cookies. The Club will pick up part of the cost of each dinner; the cost is $15 pp to club members, $20 to non-members. Beer, wine and soft drinks are included in the price. As usual, the Main Clubhouse Ballroom doors open at 3:30 pm, short meeting at 4 pm, food at 4:30 pm. There will be a 50/50 drawing after the meeting. Tickets will be available near the check-in table. Checks should be made out to Friends of Bocce and delivered to 1288 Pleasant Valley, along with the names of attendees by Oct. 19. There is a box hanging on the front door. It's a fun time! Plan to attend. Friends of Bocce This month's offering will serve to introduce pickleballers to the benefits of membership in the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA). Joining allows us to unite with avid players all over the country and learn of tournament opportunities in the area. Another nice perk is access to a fine magazine available online to members as well as by print subscription. A recent edition highlighted some of the fundamentals of the game. One helpful insight is to remember that when you are serving you are really playing defense, not offense. This may be counter-intuitive since a team can only score when serving. Nevertheless, the peculiarities of the sport create the occasion for the receiving team to get to the kitchen line quicker and, thus, be in the more powerful position. This doesn't reduce the importance of a good serve. But it should make the serving side focus on keeping the opponents deep as long as possible to compensate for their chance to beat you to the front of the court. If the receiving side lags in getting to the no-volley zone, the servers suddenly find themselves on offense after all, usually with the results to prove it. If you haven't done so, check out www.usapa. org. You will find a trove of info about equipment, including the latest changes in approved ball-design that will take effect for all sanctioned tournaments beginning in October. Sun Lakes club members have acquired a few of the new balls so you can try them out when you visit our courts. Our Board mandated club times are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 8 to 10 am. Members play on many other times during the week as well. Any questions about our club or our sport? Call our officers Royce Newman at 769-1103 or Hank Huisman at (712) 540-0864.
