By Theresa Rossetti, Resident We saw Sully, starring Tom Hanks, directed by Clint Eastwood, recently. The film had fairly good reviews, although many said the investigation of the incident was dramatized for effect. If you're looking for a feel-good movie, with thrills and chills and a happy ending, you should enjoy Sully. Tom Hanks, as always, gives a solid performance as Captain Chesley Sullenberger. The re-creation of the landing is intense, even though I knew the outcome. The NTSB investigation afterwards, which most lay people knew nothing about, did seem to be exaggerated in order to give us some bad guys to root against. If you are not familiar with this incident and don't want to know what happened before you see the movie, don't read any further! Flight 1549 took off from NY's LaGuardia Airport at 3:25 pm on January 15, 2009. Three minutes into the flight a flock of Canadian Geese flew into the plane, disabling both engines. At 3:31 pm, Captain Sullenberger and his co-pilot, Jeffrey Skiles, landed the plane on the Hudson River. The plane took on water; passengers were evacuated to the wings or inflatable rafts. The air temperature was 20 degrees; the water temp was 36 degrees. At 3:35 pm the first rescue boat was on the scene. It was a NY Waterways boat, otherwise known to New "Yawkas" as the Ferry. Circle Line sight-seeing tour boats, NYPD and FDNY boats as well as The Coast Guard arrived quickly, evacuating people to New York and New Jersey, and to a number of local area hospitals for triage. All 155 people, crew and passengers, were rescued, with only five serious injuries. 78 people were treated for cuts and exposure. The NTSB closed their investigation in May of 2010, ruling that the actions of the pilots, the design of the plane, the performance of the crew during the evacuation and the immediate arrival of the emergency responders were all responsible for the excellent outcome of this incident. As a New York City native, and resident until we moved to SDV in 2015, I remember The Miracle on The Hudson very well. Most of us were glued to the TV as we watched the nail-biting landing, the rescue and the follow-ups. I know that New Yorkers often come off as brash and insensitive. This incident, especially the rescue efforts, showed how The City pulls together in a crisis, this one with a very happy ending indeed. We give the movie two thumbs up! SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | NOVEMBER 2016 11 SULLY a movie review INGREDIENTS: 15 oz. can pumpkin, not the pie mix 12 oz. can evaporated milk 1 ½ cups sugar 4 eggs 2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice 1 tsp. salt 1 pkg. Yellow cake mix 1 cup chopped nuts, optional 2 sticks butter, melted Optional Garnish: Whipped topping, nutmeg By Theresa Rossetti, Resident I love the holidays. If you're like me, you are very busy this time of the year shopping, decorating and preparing for the holiday season. Pumpkin pie is a staple at this time of the year, but… I'm lazy. I don't make my own pie crust, I don't like to cut pies and I don't own a pie carrier gizmo. Behold the recipe below, which still yields an absolutely delicious pumpkin dessert, is easy, and, in my humble opinion, much easier to transport and serve. If you've ever made a dump cake, this recipe will look very familiar to you. LAZY PERSON PUMPKIN PIE INSTRUCTIONS: Combine pumpkin, milk, sugar, eggs, pumpkin pie spice and salt, blending well. Pour into a 13" x 9" ungreased baking dish and sprinkle the dry cake mix over the top as evenly as possible. Sprinkle on the nuts. Nothing will happen if you don't like nuts, so leave them out if you wish. Drizzle the melted butter onto the cake mix; do not mix. Bake at 350°F for 45-55 minutes, until a dry knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve with whipped topping and nutmeg, if you so desire.
