EXCURSION SIGN-UPS: All new excursions are not released for sign-up until the FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH BEGINNING AT 8 AM. If the first falls on a Saturday or Sunday then sign-ups will begin on the following Monday. If a holiday falls on the first day of the month, sign-ups will begin the next day. WAITING LIST POLICY: The waiting list is created by the Rec. Dept. for sold out events/excursions. This list is used (in order of registration) when the attendee has to cancel due to illness, doctor's appointment, etc. The waiting list is not used for additional sign-ups for secondary excursions that are scheduled due to their popularity. Contact the Rec. Dept. if you have any questions about either of these two policies. WE ACCEPT CHECKS ONLY. You can register up to 4 people (including yourself ) per check per household, payable to Sun Lakes Country Club. All Recreation Classes, Excursions, and Special Events are open to residents only, unless otherwise specified. Due to some of the excursion refund policies, and to keep cancellations down to a minimum, we ask those who wish to sign up for an excursion to please check your calendar for prior engagements prior to signing up for excursions. REFUND POLICY: 1. Cancellations made 30 days prior to the departure date of an excursion or special event will qualify for a full refund, unless otherwise specified. 2. Cancellations made after the 30 day refund deadline are not refundable. However, if an excursion or event has sold out and there is a wait list, the Recreation Department may issue a refund if the ticket can be resold from the wait list. Thank you! Columbia Memorial Space Center Wed., Jan. 18, 8am – 4pm, $39 pp. The Columbia Memorial Space Center is owned and operated by the City of Downey and was built on the site of the former NASA Downey facility. It is named the official national memorial to the Space Shuttle Columbia by a joint resolution of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. The Space Center honors the crew of STS-107 lost on February 1, 2003, Rick Husband, Willie McCool, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Ilan Ramon. The Columbia Memorial Space Center brings the wonder and excitement of science and innovation to visitors of all ages. It is a hands-on space museum and activity center that strives to be the most accessible science-based experience in the Los Angeles area. While acknowledging the rich aerospace history of Southern California, the Space Center focuses on the future, working to be the hub of innovative science learning throughout the region by reaching out to all its communities with activities focused on critical thinking, creativity, technology and science. This innovative 20,000 square foot, two-story building features a Robotics Lab, High Definition Computer Lab, and a wide range of interactive exhibits that provide engaging insights into Space Shuttle operations, living and working on the International Space Station, exploration of our solar system, aerospace engineering, and the range of fields of study and jobs related to human and robotic space exploration. After your docent tour of the Space Center, we will stop at Polly's Pies for Lunch. Meal orders will need to be placed at the time you purchase your ticket. Jeopardy Taping At Sony Studios & Farmers Market Tues., Jan. 24, 9 am - 6 pm, $49 pp Take a seat in the studio audience for an afternoon taping at Sony Studios. Jeopardy, starring Alex Trebek, averages 9 million daily viewers. It also claims trade mark status as "America's Favorite Quiz Show" from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Since its debut, Jeopardy has been honored with 28 Daytime Emmy Awards, more than any other syndicated game show. After Jeopardy, we will head on over to the LA Farmers Market for lunch (on own). The Farmers Market is an area of food stalls, sit-down eateries, prepared food vendors, and produce markets in Los Angeles. The Market first opened in July 1934 and it is also a historic Los Angeles landmark and tourist attraction. The Farmers Market features more than 100 vendors, including ready-to-eat foods, grocers, and tourist shops, and is located just south of CBS Television City. Unlike most Farmers' Markets, which are held only at intervals, the Farmers' Market of Los Angeles is a permanent installation and is open seven days a week. The vendors serve many kinds of food, both American cuisines from local farmers and local ethnic foods from the many immigrant communities of Los Angeles, with many Latin American and Asian cuisines well represented. It is located at the corner of 3rd Street and Fairfax Avenue in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles. It is adjacent to The Grove outdoor shopping mall; an electric-powered street car runs between the two sites. The Market is a destination for foodies in search of the Market's ethnic cuisines, its specialty food markets, and its prepared-food stalls.
