More on the history of auto racing venues. From 1903 to 1914, a one mile dirt oval track was run on Brunots Island, just south of Pittsburgh, PA, on the Ohio River. Louis Chevrolet won the AAA Champion car in 1905. On Sept. 10, 1907, Rex Reinersten was fatally injured in a crash there. In 1916, Chevrolet won the first Universal Films Trophy at the 1 and 1/8 mile Uniontown Speedway, south of Pittsburgh in Hopwood, PA. Meanwhile in Europe, Brooklands was a 2 and 3/4 mile motor racing circuit and aerodrome built near Weybridge in Surrey, England, United Kingdom. It opened in 1907 and was the world's first purpose-built motor racing circuit. The circuit hosted its last race in 1939. Competition gradually spread to other parts of the British Empire. The first competition in India was held in 1905 by the Motor Union of Western India. It ran 810 miles from Delhi to Mumbai, in an attempt to expose India to the automobile and test its suitability for Indian conditions. The oldest asphalt-paved oval track in the United States is Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in Thompson, Connecticut, once known as the "Indianapolis of the East." Cruzin' Cronies is a Classic Car Club that meets the first Saturday of each month. Cars are displayed at 8 am in the Main Clubhouse parking lot, after which we meet briefly in the Multipurpose Room at 8:30 am, and then go to breakfast. There are no dues, just friendship, outings, and laughter. You don't even need a classic car to join. Call Sandra Glickman for more information, 267-3187. 24 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2016 | Cruzin' Cronies The Sun Lakes Photo Group next meeting will be on Nov. 14 — second Monday of November, in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room at 7 pm. In November we will be planning our annual Holiday get together. Sun Lakes Photo Group meetings are fun for anyone interested in photography. We share pictures at each meeting. Some meetings have tutorials on Photoshop techniques, digital cameras and other subjects. Our meetings are on the second Monday of each month at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Mulitpurpose Room, this month on Nov. 14. There is a projector system and photos can be brought on either a CD or a flash drive, also known as a thumb drive. Some of our members had no idea which end of the camera was which when they first started and you will see that their progress is amazing. Some of the groups' photos are on the automatic electronic display near the Main Clubhouse restaurant. You will enjoy attending the Sun Lakes Photo Group. Meetings are informal, there are no dues and whether you are a novice or a pro it is always fun to see what others are doing with their cameras. Info; Steve Felber, 769-6898. Photo Group
