26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2016 | Yiddish Culture Club How would you react if you found out that after 18 years of raising the boy you loved and thought was your son it turns out that he is not your "blood" child? If that is not enough of a shock how do you think you would react to know that he is really the son of enemies to you and your country? On Wed., Nov. 9, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse the Yiddish Culture Club will present the 2012 Tokyo Grand Prix prize winning film The Other Son, a moving French drama which tackles the Israeli-Palestinian conflict via two boys born on the same day in the same clinic who are mistakenly switched during a raid and given to the wrong parents to be raised each on the wrong side of the struggle. Making a feel-good film about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could have led to disaster, but French writer/director Lorraine Levy manages to avoid many pitfalls in this high concept family tale. Joseph Silbers, an 18-year-old musician hoping to join the Israeli Air Force, though his real goal is to be a folk singer along the lines of Dylan Thomas, believes his mother is a French born physician and his father an Israeli army commander. They live in a Tel Aviv suburb. A blood test for military service reveals he is not their son. A doctor in Haifa resolves this mystery — Joseph's real parents are Palestinians Said and Leila Al Bazaaz who live in the West Bank. Their son,Yacine Al Bazaaz, is the true son of the Israeli Silbers. Once the truth is out Levy explores the effect it has on the two families. She does not dip into pure melodrama or socio- political messages but reveals the repercussions of the events on each character. What are the future's ultimate hurdles? Does blood run thicker than political boundaries? Do the families reevaluate their beliefs? All are welcome to come and enjoy this most interesting film. There is no charge for members. Charge for guests is $3. Snacks, cake and coffee will be served. No reservations are necessary. For more info., call Diane at 769-0130. Calling all men!
