54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2016 | Pickleball Club The Fall Tournament is almost over. Playoffs are Nov. 14 and 15. FYI, Mon., Nov. 14, beginning at 3pm, will be pre-playoffs needed to settle any ties and/or determine wild cards. Since the A and B Leagues have four divisions, Mon., Tues., Wed. and Thurs., no wild card will be needed for them. The AA League has only three divisions this fall, thus a wild card team will be needed to fill out the semi-finals. Semi- finals and finals will be played on Tues. Nov. 15, beginning at 3pm. Come on out and join the fun! We will take our usual holiday break following the playoffs. The Winter Tournament begins the week of the Jan. 16. Team entries must be in by Jan. 6. The tournament will run seven weeks, with playoffs on March 6 and 7. Your membership dues will need to be paid for 2017. Membership to the Friends of Bocce is still $12 per year. Team fees remain $3 pp, per tournament. Entry cards can be found in the cabinet at the courts. All monies and entries go to 1288 Pleasant Valley. There is a box on her door. Questions, call Dutch at 845-0392. Friends of Bocce Some of our members recently toured the northwest and played pickleball at an RV resort in Wyoming. They returned enthused about some of the practice sessions used there involving working on the "dink." That is the signature shot in pickleball, although many play the game as though oblivious to it, choosing an all-out power game. The dink is a short drop shot that just clears the net and lands in the no-volley zone called the "kitchen." It takes advantage of the finesse elements characteristic of big-time pickleball. Good dinking requires patience and practice but will quickly improve one's game. The tips our friends brought back from their road trip included beginning the game with all four players at the kitchen line. All shots are dinks, with any shot that goes over the yellow line being a loss of point or serve. This forces the teams to concentrate on improving a key technique. When combined team scores reach seven, the game reverts to the usual format with service from the baseline. Some of us have even played games that were entirely "dink-o-ramas" and have benefited from the practice. This can be a good use of the courts when young grandchildren are learning the game as dinks are easier for the little ones to learn. Fall is upon us and we hope to see more afternoon and evening play as the weather cools. The official club time slots remain Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 8 to 10 am, however we enjoy many other times during the week. By the next edition of the Lifestyles we will have held our latest club tournament and soirée. These social events are some of the liveliest and entertaining aspects of club membership. If you are looking for a good workout among good- natured folks, give pickleball a try. See you on the courts!
