FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2016 57 Beaumont is ideally located for a variety of hiking locations: mountains, deserts, beaches and rolling hills. In November, we tackled the rolling hills south of Loma Linda. At the south end of Mountain View Drive is the Hulda Crooks Park. Hulda Hoehn Crooks (May 19, 1896 – Nov. 23, 1997) was an American mountaineer. Affectionately known as "Grandma Whitney" she successfully scaled 14,505-foot (4,421 m) Mount Whitney 23 times between the ages of 65 and 91. She had climbed 97 other peaks during this period. Hulda Crooks was a long-time resident of Loma Linda. She often spent time with children in the community, encouraging them to appreciate nature and stay active. In 1991, Loma Linda dedicated a park at the base of the south hills as Hulda Crooks Park. The park trails crisscross treeless hills under powerlines and offer great views of the San Bernardino Basin. Our seven hikers enjoyed the pleasant weather of a warming fall day with clear skies. The first mile was along a well-maintained dirt road at the valleys between two hills. At the Beaumont Ridge Trail marker the trail began to snake up one of the hills toward Edison's supports for our energy demands. It was then down the other side and back up another hill. Here we decided that the lunch bell was ringing in Redlands so we retraced our path to the parked cars. And then we closed in on the gourmet burger and craft beer saloon, Eureka Burgers, near Trader Joe's in Redlands. In December our "hike" will be a night walk looking at Christmas lights in Four Seasons. We will meet at the Summit at 4 pm to offload our pot luck dinners and then silent carol in the new housing areas. To find out where we are hiking, call or email Lynette Simonson, Hike Central, at (951) 377-0392 lynette.simonson@gmail.com. ~ Len Tavernetti TAKE A HIKE CLUB L-R: Vito and Judy Winters, Mona Swinhart, Len Tavernetti, Tony Ramu, Tina Soeten, Beaumont Ridge marker and Lynette Simonson on the trail The scenic view was "electrifying" Well, as promised last month, the winners of our last Singles and Doubles Tournaments in 2016 would appear in the December article along with pictures, and they are: First and Second place in Singles competition and in that order was: Dave Thomason and Ron Erickson. First and Second place in Doubles competition and in order were: Richard Burns/RonErickson and Dave Roldan/Rich Yanes. Well done gentlemen! At our November social, we honored one of our charter couples, Richard and Janet Burns, who left us at the end of November. They will be missed. Our dessert was hosted by Jill and Rich Yanes' at their beautiful home which was already decorated for Christmas – Disney style. All I could say was WOW and thank you for the delicious pies. I was also impressed that Jill and Rich came back from their vacation spot just to host this social and went back again the next day. Now that shows the love and dedication our members have for this club. So, if you are looking for a very special club and group of people to hang out with, come on out and join us. From all the members of the Horseshoe Club, we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We meet every Wednesday at 9 am at The Summit.
