60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2016 Racquet Club Our latest Play Day had a great turnout for a morning of stress-free tennis in gorgeous weather. Once again, though, the highlight was not necessarily on the court; it was under the canopy. Ambassadors Mickey and Howard Nelson risked contributing to the over-polarized political climate of the pre-election time by providing drawing prizes emblematic of the presidential campaigns (cam-pains?). With his ticket being the first one drawn from the coffee can, Irve Sturner got the opportunity to choose one of the two secret prizes. One gift bag was labeled "Wisdom," and the other was labeled "Strength." So, after Howard's introductory comments about the relative merits of those attributes for the President, Club President Irve reached for the bag labeled "Wisdom," whereupon he withdrew an owl, a traditional symbol of wisdom. Why owls represent wisdom is unknown, because they eat mice and bugs and gross stuff like that. The next club member to have his ticket drawn was the newest member, Dennis Gunnarson. With only the "Strength" bag left, Dennis pulled out his very own Donald Trump bobble-head doll. As of this writing it was unknown who won the election, but Richard Carrasco thought the Trump doll was awesome. As for the tennis, Tina Soeten was selected as the top woman player of the day. Congratulations, Tina! Our Annual Meeting in October was a huge success with every seat in the room occupied. Members who rejoined that night received their 2017 membership sticker, imprinted with a tennis ball motif and the year. The stickers, hand-cut by Barbara Miller, are the size of a pencil eraser (remember those?) and are intended to be adhered to the member's name badge. However, many members will just throw the darn thing into the bottom of their tennis bag, because it takes a neurosurgeon to peel off the backing. With or without a sticker, membership remains just $20 for the 2017 year. With Play Days, hosted luncheons, special tournaments, the annual dinner meetings all included in the one membership fee, it's a great bargain. Come on out for a Play Day on the last Saturday of the month and find out. Check out www.fsbrc.org. ~ Steven Hovey The word "bocce" comes from Italian word which is plural, means "to bowl." The small white ball "the pallino" is thrown first to start the game. Rules are very simple, get your ball as close to the pallino as possible in order to score a point. Much like pool, bocce requires players to take turns. This makes it an ideal game for socializing in between a player's turn. There are often cheers, or laughter. No one has an edge in Bocce Ball unless of course they have played for years. We generally play a game to 12 points. Two games are generally played and take approximately 1-1/2 hours. We mix and match, so no team is expert and we change numbers on a team, so no one is left out. Bocce Ball is played several times a week at the Summit. Current schedule is 9 am Tuesdays and 3 pm Wednesdays. Many groups play at different times. Call Summit desk (951) 769- 6444 and ask attendant for current times of play. Balls are always available for play anytime. There is a third set of balls now available which are slightly smaller with four colors of two each. These are great for kids and families. If you would like to come early, to meet others and learn game, or practice before scheduled times, or a different day or time, call Mike Saperstein at (951) 769-7909, Larry Anderson at (951) 845-8003 or Jeanine Baker at (951) 797-0833. ~ Mike Saperstein Bocce Ball Left: Loading up at the buffet line Below: A full house at the annual dinner L to R: Jim Samples, Joann Martin, Barbara Harwell, Judy Erickson L to R: Jackie Bott, Helen Lindstrom, Kimi Olsen, Jean Bauer
