More on the history of auto racing venues. Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in Thompson, CN opened on May 26, 1940. It features a 5⁄8-mile paved oval racetrack, and a 1.7-mile road racing course. Once known as the "Indianapolis of the East," it was the first asphalt-paved racing oval track in the United States. Each year, this track hosts one of the great fall variety events "The World Series of Auto Racing" highlighted by the ISMA Super Modifieds and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. This event frequently draws over 350 race cars in 16 separate divisions over three days. Cruzin' Cronies is a Classic Car Club that meets the first Saturday of each month. Cars are displayed at 8 am in the Main Clubhouse parking lot, after which we meet briefly in the M at 8:30 am, and then go to breakfast. There are no dues, just friendship, outings, and laughter. You don't even need a classic car to join. This month, we applaud our latest winners at the Palm Springs Airport Museum Show: • Ken and Lavinia Brass, 1938 Packard "Outstanding Packard" • Bill and Greta Rothenbuhler, 1934 Chrysler Airflow "Special Interest" • Richard and Alicia Kramer, 1941 Ford "McCormick's Sponsors Choice" Call Sandra Glickman for more club information, 267-3187. 24 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | DECEMBER 2016 | Cruzin' Cronies Our next meeting will be our holiday party in the North Clubhouse on Dec. 12 — second Monday of December, at 6 pm. The party will be catered so if you haven't signed up, you only have a few days left. For January you are encouraged to bring five pictures of your work on a CD or flash drive to the meeting. Show everyone what you've been doing so far this winter or simply bring a few favorites. You're sure to get some critiques or oooohs and aaaahs. In January we will also be having a tutorial on a subject not decided yet. Sun Lakes Photo Group meetings are fun for anyone interested in photography. We share pictures at each meeting. Some meetings have tutorials on Photoshop techniques, digital cameras and other subjects. Our meetings are on the second Monday of each month at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room (except December). There is a projector system so photos can be seen by all. Some of our members had no idea which end of the camera was which when they first started and you will see that their progress is amazing. Some of the group's photos are on the automatic electronic display near the Main Clubhouse restaurant. You will enjoy attending the Sun Lakes Photo Group. Meetings are informal, there are no dues and whether you are a novice or a pro it is always fun to see what others are doing with their cameras. For information please call Steve Felber, 769-6898.
