| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2017 | 15 The J. Paul Getty Center Thurs., March 23, 7:30 am to 5 pm, $30 pp The J. Paul Getty Trust is an international culture and philanthropic institution devoted to the visual arts that features the Getty Conservation Institute. The J. Paul Getty Trust and Getty programs serve a varied audience from two locations: the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Getty Villa in Malibu. Getty Center campus includes the restaurant building with its 225-seat restaurant, 415-seat Getty Café and Trustees Boardroom; the east building — home of the Getty Conservation institute, the Getty Education Institute for the Arts, the Getty Grant program — where intimate sunken gardens, terraces and two exterior elevator shafts provide fluid movement between indoor and outdoor spaces. The museum is comprised of five interconnected two-story pavilions and offers visitors the choice of exploring the collections chronologically or of moving in and out of the pavilions at their leisure — taking time to enjoy the exterior courtyard spaces with the three fountains and Mexican Cypress trees and the cactus garden to the south. Throughout the museum, there is a freedom of choice, with routes that are fluid and crisscrossing. One can explore the galleries in sequence or at random, at first or second-story level without having to retrace ones steps. Due to the interplay of interior and exterior space between gallery and garden, one always knows where one is and where one has been. You'll be free to experience the Getty at your own pace. You'll see paintings by many of the most familiar masters like Rembrandt, Goya, Monet and Cézanne to name a few. You'll also discover one of the greatest collections of drawings by such artists as Michelangelo and Degas. From the Museum's terraces and walkways, visitors encounter breathtaking views of the nearby Santa Monica Mountains, the snow-capped San Gabriel's, downtown skyscrapers, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Catalina Island. You will learn about J. Paul Getty, the businessman and art collector who used the bulk of his wealth to create the arts institution that bears his name. Considered the world's richest man in the 1950s and 60s, Getty made his fortune in the oil business. Upon his death in 1976 he bequeathed his estate to his small namesake museum, along with a remarkably broad directive. Accordingly, the J. Paul Getty Trust was created, the world's largest cultural and philanthropic organization dedicated to the visual arts. The installation includes objects that Getty collected personally, and a digital interactive experience that visitors can use to learn about his life, business dealings, and establishment of the Trust and the Museum. Today lunch is on your own, on site. The Getty Center campus includes the restaurant building with its 225-seat restaurant and its 415-seat café.
