FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2017 15 other presents to two local families with a portion of the sales of their FSB license plates. And chairperson Roxie Elliott said that starting this month, January, 2017, a portion of the club's dues will go to help support several local families. As is becoming obvious, altruism breeds more altruism. Helping others is so rewarding that after we've done it, we want to do more of it. I met with Dorothy Payne of the Knit and Crochet Group. They have been busy! Dorothy said that about eight years ago, when she became the chairperson, she had the thought, "we need a purpose." And purposeful they have been. There were knit and crocheted hats and scarves which were donated to a homeless shelter in Hemet. Then came baby blankets donated to San Gorgonio Hospital and more baby blankets donated to Redlands Community Hospital. Lap throws went to the V.A. Hospital and they have been asked to do more of them this year. One member saw an article about the need for scarves for our currently serving armed forces. And the scarves were crafted and donated. Another member knew someone at Camp Pendleton who asked for 200 caps/hats for Wounded Warriors. The Marine Corps provided the money to purchase yarn, logos, other necessary supplies and asked for the caps by March. "But we finished all 200 of them by the end of November" Dorothy reported with obvious and well-deserved pride. With the spirit of giving well established in this group, it's hard to imagine what may be created over the 12 months of this year. Now back to holiday giving. The "astonishing" Holiday Home Tour was held this past Dec. 17. Betty and Terry Fears superbly decorated their home, then opened their doors to those who purchased a $5 ticket. As stated on their advertising flyer, "All proceeds will help feed families in The Pass community via Carol's Kitchen." I know there are other groups and clubs I didn't include. That was not done purposely. I just did not know to talk with you. And I know there are numerous individuals who donate time, effort and money to many worthwhile causes. That was not in the scope of this article. But maybe it will be the focus of a future article. I do know that I was profoundly affected by interviewing for and writing this article. I keep thinking about my departure from the Lodge on the cold and windy night I spoke with the Social Committee. As I drew further into my warm coat, I kept thinking about the little boy who, when asked what he wanted for a gift said, "I'd like to have a warm jacket." Do you need anything more to motivate you to continue the good works done here at our home, Four Seasons Beaumont?
