FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2017 45 We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the RCN; thus, our January meeting will be Jan. 17. Visitors are always welcome. We invite all photographers, regardless of skill level, to join us for our regular meetings, workshops, speakers, field trips, and in- house demos. For the December meeting, the assignment was the use of "bokeh." We last did the same assignment in our November, 2015 meeting and thought it was time to revisit this important topic. The Wikipedia Dictionary defines this word as coming from the Japanese word "boke" meaning (in a photographic sense) the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens (on a camera). So, for example, if you take a picture of someone in an environment that does not have an interesting background, then the photographer may want to have the final picture show the subject (foreground) in focus with the background out of focus or blurry. This would be the use of bokeh, i.e. the blurry background. One of the ways to do this would be to open up the aperture setting of the lens, e.g. f2.8 or f3.5. Another way would be to use software such as Adobe Photoshop. We had some great representations showing both the use of bokeh (blurry background) and not using bokeh, i.e. sharp foreground and sharp background. As always, our goal is to educate our members how to become better photographers. As usual, we then discussed and conducted a constructive critique. We learn a lot about various techniques, software, and hardware to enhance our work. Afterwards, we enjoyed great holiday snacks some of the members brought to the meeting. Now that most of the holidays are behind us, we'll be discussing tips and tricks for processing those special photographs. We hope to see you soon at one of our meetings. ~ Lyle Cameron Camera Club Big Little Lies by bestselling author, Liane Moriarty is our selection for the Jan. 10 meeting at 9:30 am. The author's sixth adult novel, her story follows three women, each at a major crossroads. The message Moriarty sends is that we all tell lies - to each other and, more importantly, to ourselves. But sometimes it's the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal. Please join us whether you've read the book or not and newcomers are always welcome. For more information about the Book Club, please contact Doreen Sanders at (951) 769-1913. ~ Kathy Roach Book Club Photo was taken by our chairperson, Irve Sturner, who, according to Irve, was "shooting the super moon on Nov. 14 when all of a sudden, a flash of darkness bolted across the sky." Fortunately, Irve was at the right place at the right time to capture this eventful phenomenon.
