60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2017 Racquet Club Happy tennis year to all! We closed out the 2016 year with some great fun and some adequate tennis at our monthly Play Day. Under a clear blue sky and with barely a hint of chill in the air, more than a dozen racket-wielding tennis players made it out to the courts on the post-holiday weekend. The only thing missing was our beloved Court Ambassadors, Mickey and Howard Nelson. Though we have always appreciated the fun they brought with their unique drawing prizes and amusing stories (did Howard invent "fake news?"), their absence this Play Day just made us appreciate them more. So, we extend our thanks to the Nelsons for their many contributions to the members of the Four Seasons Beaumont Racquet Club, and we share their love for our favorite game. Whether you love tennis and play regularly or have a hankering to get back on the court after years of missing it, our Play Days are perfect for you to join us and play at whatever level suits you. Play Days will continue to be scheduled for the last Saturday of each month, beginning at 8:30 am. The Play Days are open to all residents and their guests. Check out www.fsbrc.org. ~ Steven Hovey Throwing balls or rocks at a target is the oldest game known to mankind. As early as 5000 B.C. the Egyptians played a form of Bocce. Early Romans used coconuts brought from Africa. Four Seasons is very modern. If you have not seen them, come out and see our improved courts and have fun. The rules are very simple: throw underhand, stand behind or on throwing line, get your ball as close to the pallino as possible in order to score a point. Much like pool, bocce requires players to take turns. This makes it an ideal game for socializing in between a player's turn. You often hear cheers or laughter. No one has an edge in bocce ball unless of course they have played for years. We generally play a game to 12 points. Two games are generally played and take approximately 1-1/2 hours. We mix and match so no team is expert, and change numbers on a team so no one is left out. Bocce ball is played several times a week at the Summit. Our current schedule is 9 am Tuesdays and 3 pm Wednesdays. Many groups play at different times. Call the Summit desk (951) 769-6444 and ask the attendant for current times of play. Balls are always available for play anytime. There is a third set of balls now available that are slightly smaller and four colors of two each. It's great for kids and families, and adaptive to three teams or four teams of two balls each. If you would like to come early to meet others and learn the game, or practice before scheduled times, or play on a different day or time, call Mike Saperstein (951) 769-7909, Larry Anderson (951) 845- 8003 or Jeanine Baker (951) 797-0833. ~ Mike Saperstein Bocce Ball Bocce back in the good old days
