SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | FEBRUARY 2017 17 By Theresa Rossetti, Resident In honor of Valentine's Day, I present for your consideration Romantic Movies. Not sobbing, crying ones, but boy gets girl, happy tears, ones. So, no Love Story, The Notebook or Ghost, all of which are good flicks but not happy endings. Rotten Tomatoes, one of my go-to sites for movie reviews, had a list of 100 films to choose from. IMDB, another source of info, had many of the same films and some interesting others as well. And then of course, there's me, with definite opinions on what constitutes a good romantic movie. Without further ado, and in no particular order, here are some you might want to check out this month for date night: Robin Hood (the Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland one), Roman Holiday (the Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck one), On the Waterfront (the Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint one), Annie Hall (the Diane Keaton, Woody Allen one), An American in Paris (the Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron one), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (the Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell one), The Princess Bride (the "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father" one), Sideways (the love affair with Solvang, CA one), Bull Durham (the Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon one), An Affair to Remember (the Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr one), Say Anything (the John Cusack and a boom box one) and Moonstruck (the Cher and Brooklyn one). Most of these movies are over 30 years old. For more current fare, I offer the following: Ever After (the Drew Barrymore Cinderella-ish one), Love Actually (the way too many people to list one), The Proposal (the Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds one), Serendipity (the John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale one), Something's Gotta Give (the Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson one), Must Love Dogs (the John Cusack (again), Diane Lane one), and Waitress (the Keri Russell, Nathan Filion one). And now, and I know you've been holding your breath, my faves: Notting Hill (the Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts one), Pride and Prejudice (the "I don't care which version, they're all great" (except the Zombie one one), While You Were Sleeping (the Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman one), Sleepless in Seattle (the Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan one) and, drum roll please, my current favorite, The Lake House. "What? Who? House?" you say. "I've never heard of that movie," you say. To answer you I say — Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, one lives in 2004, the other in 2006, and they must straighten out the space-time continuum to be together. It's awesome! One of these days I'll bore you with my love for stories that mess with space and time (Outlander, I'm talking to you) but for now I'll leave you to search out one of these movies, pop the popcorn and settle in for a bit of romance. Love is in the air (or at least on DVD)
