| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | March 2017 | 37 Did You Know? By Micki Rosen, resident of Four Seasons Beaumont DID YOU KNOW THAT MARCH 24 IS CHOCOLATE COVERED RAISINS DAY? One of the most common brands of chocolate covered raisins on the market is Raisinets, first introduced to the world in 1927. It was such a success that candy giant Nestle took the opportunity to add it to its holdings in 1984. While many other brands exist in the market at large, Raisinets became the Kleenex of the chocolate covered raisin world. DID YOU KNOW THAT MARCH 8 IS PEANUT CLUSTER DAY? Many foods have their own special day, and the humble peanut is no exception. Strictly speaking, a peanut is not a nut but in fact a variety of bean. Peanuts were originally cultivated from plants native to Paraguay, and have been enjoyed as an addition to cooking or as a tasty snack for centuries. Whether you prefer your peanut-based dishes savory or sweet, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Peanut Cluster Day: smothered in chocolate or with salt, enjoy this protein rich snack. DID YOU KNOW THAT MARCH 8 IS FALSE TEETH DAY? The first society known to have made dentures is a pre-Roman Italian people called the Etruscans. They used real teeth, whether human or animal, on a gold band and fitted them over the wearer's existing teeth. Using real teeth, often taken from those killed in battle, was the only method of making dentures until science allowed artificial teeth to be made from materials such as plastic – a much more civilized method. DID YOU KNOW THAT MARCH 18 IS CORN DOG DAY? Corn dogs ultimately find their heritage in the sausage makers of Germany, and by extension those who immigrated to Texas. The German Texans apparently weren't finding their sausages well-received, and it's said that they innovated and dipped them in a delicious breading and fried them. The first record of the corn dog is in 1927, when a patent was submitted to the U.S. Patent Office; we have been enjoying this food on a stick at fairs and elsewhere ever since. DID YOU KNOW THAT MARCH 23 IS CHIP AND DIP DAY? Dips have been made for thousands of years. One of the earliest dips to become popular long before chips ever came into existence is the Greek tzatziki, a combination of yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, salt and olive oil. Greeks still eat tzatziki with meats and bread, but since the invention of the potato chip in the mid-19th century, it and many variations of it have also become popular chip dips. Guacamole, yet another iconic chip dip, was first made by the Aztecs. The potato chip itself is believed to have been invented in 1853 by a cook named George Crum whose potato wedges were repeatedly sent back to the kitchen by an unsatisfied customer who claimed they were too thick. Crum eventually became irritated and decided to serve the man potato slices so thin he could see through them, fried to a crisp, and topped with a rather excessive amount of salt. The customer absolutely loved them, and chips were born!
