Pickleball Club
The Pickleball Club bounded into the new year in style, first with
its annual meeting in January followed by its first part on February
11. Our new officers for the coming year are: President, Royce
Newman, VP, Nick Caputo and Secretary/Treasurer, Jim Hodgson.
The annual meeting was an occasion to refine and edit some of the
club by-laws. Changes include moving the annual meeting from
January to the October-December Quarter each calendar year. It
will also be specified that non-residents are not be eligible for club
membership but are welcome to play with members.
Club members should mark their calendars for the summer and
fall parties that will be held on Sat., July 22 and Sat., Oct. 17. These
are unfailingly super-fun affairs and are open to non-members as
well. Details will be forthcoming as the year rolls on.
The regular club play schedule remains Monday, Wednesday and
Saturday mornings from 8 to 10 am on the shared courts adjacent to
the Main Clubhouse.
We notice that pickleball is penetrating down to early school-years
as middle schoolers are getting phys-ed units devoted to our sport.
It has traditionally been seen as a "senior" activity and, indeed, is
very popular in age 55+ communities and RV-resort parks across
the country. But in recent years, pickleball has gained a great deal of
currency with young adults and a growing number of children. Our
neighboring communities are taking notice and activity centers that
span age groups are offering the sport.
If you are new to Sun Lakes, come on out and give the game a
try! We have paddles and balls to loan for those new to the sport so
you don't have lay out money to check it out. More and more folks
are sporting Fit Bits or other step-counting devices. You may be
surprised at the number of steps you'll get in an hour's play. See you
on the courts!
