CLUBS & GROUPS Ballroom Dance Club We are taught ballroom dancing by excellent and professional instructors. Step and step, routine by routine, we learn each dance. Since the beginning of this year alone we've worked on fi ve distinct dances, and over the course of the past four and a half years we've learned 14 different dances! Who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks? Old School Dance Everyone enjoyed August's monthly dance… grooving to oldies but goodies, 1950s rock and roll, 1960s Motown sounds as well as jazz and blues. We not only enjoyed a great time enjoying some of our favorite music, we got a good workout. After the dance, we ordered food from Smitty's Bistro inside the Lodge and cooled down, enjoying each other's company and discussing ideas for future dances. I would like to thank Cindy Graves, our Four Seasons Activity Director. She is a wonderful person who keeps all the groups together as they continue to thrive for years to come. I also would like to thank all the dancers who help keep the oldies but goodies tunes alive and well. If you like to dance and be carefree, see what the Old School Dance crew is doing to have fun and stay fi t. Twelve rigs will be there from Four Seasons. We are looking forward to a great time planned for us by our wagonmasters Jane and Tim Jacobson. Lots of cooking outside, going for walks on the beach, checking out activities at the pier, and watching surfers all add up to a fun time. Another trip in the planning stages is a trip for May 2013 to some of California's fi nest wine regions. We will begin with a stay in Paso Robles where we will tour wineries, visit the downtown shopping area, and eat at a Basque restaurant. From there we will go north to the Russian River Valley and the Anderson Valley. We will tour some wineries as well as visit Mendocino. Dorothy and Steve Meier and Nancy and Ron Morgan will be wagonmasters for this trip. If you have an RV come join us on one of our trips. We promise you will have a fantastic time. FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2012 31 Our meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month at 6 pm in the Arts and Crafts Room at the Lodge. ~ Nancy Morgan We just fi nished the Mambo/Salsa, and it's time for some review courses – to keep all those wonderful steps and routines fresh in our minds. Next it's the West Coast Swing. Dean Collins arrived in Los Angeles in 1937 and was infl uential in developing a style of dance unique to the West Coast. To him it was just another form of swing. He didn't give it any special name and judged it only by whether it was good or bad. Lauré Haile, Arthur Murray National Dance Director, called it "Western Swing, " and in the 1950s it was also called "Sophisticated Swing." Whatever its background, West Coast Swing is now one of the most popular dances throughout the country. This dance is done in a 6 – 8 foot long "slot." The steps and movements are small. The slot pattern is broken only when partners exchange positions, called a "side pass" – where the man steps out of the slot to allow the lady to pass straight through to the other side. Its loads of fun so come and join us. We meet every Monday night in the Ballroom. From 6:30 to 7 pm we receive the basics of the dance, and from 7 to 8 pm we get more advanced instructions. There is an embarrassingly small fee for the lessons. On most Thursday nights we have a free dance practice from 6 to 7 pm in the Ballroom.
