20 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2017 Emergency preparedness committee The EPP First Aid Team will be offering First Aid Workshops and CPR/AED Training for the community in the coming weeks. The purpose of these workshops and training is to prepare each community member in case of a medical emergency. The EPP First Aid Team consists of very qualified professionals who are currently or formerly in the medical and firefighter/paramedic fields. With their knowledge and experience, we will be able to prepare you with basic first aid techniques. In the First Aid workshops we will be teaching using household items or items easily obtained at our local stores. Some of the subjects that will be offered are: • How to recognize a stroke • How to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness • How to apply a sling • Treating minor injuries • Stop bleeding • How to set a compound fracture • Splinting a fracture • How to treat different type of burns • Head injuries • Proper method of applying a tourniquet • Bandaging • First aid to eye injuries • Is it the cold or the flu? First aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and/or promote recovery. It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available, such as performing CPR while awaiting an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of minor conditions, such as applying a plaster to a cut. First aid is generally performed by the layperson, with many people trained in providing basic levels of first aid, and others willing to do so from acquired knowledge. In addition to the First Aid Workshops, we will be offering CPR/AED training. We currently have certified CPR/AED trainers who have received teaching certificates through the American Heart Association. Three levels of training will be offered. Family and Friends CPR/AED – Life saving skills that can be used at home or in the community. Heartsaver CPR/AED – Homeowner volunteers who provide assistance during an emergency. Completion card is provided. Basic Life Support/AED – Designed for the professional. Completion card is provided. Further information regarding these classes will be made available. EPC committee meeting is held on the third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be April 18, at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. ~ Alfred Blair At our meeting on March 7, some familiar recurring subjects were discussed, notably speeding and how to get residents and visitors to slow down, and upgrading and enhancing camera equipment for better security. Bids for equipment were considered and pedestrian crossing systems were demonstrated at a separate meeting on March 16, in order for the committee to make a recommendation to the Board. Eight crossing points have been identified with a view to connecting the trails and making those crossing points safer and wheelchair accessible. The crossings will slow traffic and are long overdue as a recent traffic survey proved that 60 percent of drivers are ignoring the 30 mile per hour limit on Four Seasons Circle. If you wish to raise any safety issues please attend our next meeting on April 3. Please note that it will be held at 10 am in the RCN building. Meanwhile, please ease off the gas to make our community a safe place for all and be aware of people and pets out walking. ~ Geoffrey Wilson Safety Committee
