This is the perspective of the artist of the month, John Baeyertz: "Venice is a wonderful city for the eye. It rests on what was once a sand bar in a shallow bay. Water is everywhere reflecting sunlight or lamp light. It is filled with breathtaking buildings and their famed canals. It's an historic city built long ago by merchant princes who sailed throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The merchants returned with a knowledge of every kind of architecture and style from their travels. They also sailed back to Venice with the riches, plundered items and skilled builders to create this special city. The Piazza San Marco and its famed Basilica, built in the Byzantine style, is known to all who travel here. However, around every corner is a water vista, church or palace worth seeing. My travels to Venice, many years ago, inspired me to create this drawing using white pen on black paper. This is totally new technique for me. Our instructor Rob Kelman guides each of us to improve our skills and challenges us to try new techniques. The challenge for this drawing was learning to reverse my thinking about what is black and what is white and to concentrate on seeing before I started to draw. It was a worthwhile process. Rob always guides us to see first then begin our artwork. Even if you do not attend classes every week, you will always return to a welcoming atmosphere. Between Rob, our instructor, and other students, there is always a piece of advice that will make the art you are working on just that much better. Most students have done images that are truly inspiring. If you have ever been inspired to create any kind of drawing, I highly recommend this class. It doesn't matter your skill level, you will be welcomed and you might just be surprised by the artist that is inside you." We meet Mondays from 10 am to 12 noon and/or Wednesdays from 6 to 8 pm.
