14 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2017 Four Seasons Spotlight our Seasons has always been a caring and appreciative community. To express our appreciation for those who have invested blood, sweat and tears into being a director on the HOA Board, we have created the new Memorial Garden on the Lodge grounds. On Friday, May 5 at 10 am we will gather for a short program to honor James Russell and Jean Sandoval, the first two Board Members to die. For those of you in the community who are unfamiliar with this little piece of Four Seasons history, I thought I would fill you in. Who was this wonderful guy Jim Russell? Let me tell you… Jim Russell was the original Four Seasons Pioneer. Yes, he was in house #1, lot # 1. He and his wife Marilee moved into the community in 2005 and he volunteered to be a Board member shortly thereafter. He was known for his great sense of humor, terrific rapport and neighborliness with all of the new homeowners pouring into the community, as well as his crazy colored socks. He started the very first Bistro Committee, to try to find a vendor to fill the little sandwich space that the builder imagined when creating the Lodge Bistro. Jim and his committee of three resident women, went around "lunching" to see if they could locate a proprietor that served great food and who might possibly consider moving to our facilities. One day the little committee ventured into Loma Linda and there they found "Smitty's-It's-A-Deli." Jim loved the food and began talking with owners Brian and Kathy Smith. After much convincing from Jim, the Smiths decided to give it a try. To this day, we still benefit from the decision of those negotiations as the Smith family have turned the once-imagined sandwich shop into a full restaurant. Jim was also responsible for finding Carmen Lopez, the proprietor of our physical education classes, called "Pro-Fit." He and Marilee sponsored the singles group in their home for years as well as helped and supported nearly all Social Committee events for years. Jim invested himself totally in getting this community off to a good start. He was a Board Member from 2005 to 2007. A "Pioneer Rose" has been planted in the Memorial Garden in his name. Jean Sandoval was a mover and a shaker too. She was an active member of the Four Seasons community the entire time she lived here, serving as the chair of the Emergency Preparedness Committee, secretary of the Landscape Committee, member of the Ad Hoc Renovation Committee and ultimately serving as a Board member from 2015 until her untimely death in a car crash in 2016. Jean was also an incredibly creative and crafty gal and worked tirelessly creating 300 tiny purses for the Social Committee's Fashion Show and Tea. She had been a nurse for 31 years in her pre-retirement career and brought to Four Seasons all of that expertise which she used to create the Emergency Handbook given out to community members today. She will forever be greatly missed and appreciated. A "Florence Nightingale Rose" has been planted in the Memorial Garden in her name. Join us as we honor these two amazing contributors to our community and start a new tradition with the Memorial Garden.
