20 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2017 Emergency preparedness committee AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) SURVEY What is an AED? It is an Automated External Defibrillator. It is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a person. It is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layperson. The use of AEDs is taught in many First Aid /CPR classes. Four Seasons EPP will be offering Family and Friends CPR/AED training beginning in May. It will be free of charge to the community and will teach the basics following the guidelines established by the American Heart Association. In recent weeks, a survey was conducted regarding the AEDs. It was found that each one of the AEDs had some discrepancies and/or limitations. In addition to the equipment surveyed, a verbal survey was also taken of various sports clubs and community members, asking the following questions: Do you know what an AED is? Do you know where they are located? If additional AEDs are to be purchased, where should the AEDs be located? All didn't know what an AED was. Most didn't know where they were located. All agreed that they should be located in a place where they were visible to everyone. Also, a unanimous agreement was that they should be located in areas where there is a great deal of activity. It was also a consensus that the life of a community member takes precedence over aesthetic convenience. The location should be in a prominent place and easy to get to. Precious seconds can determine the life or death of a Four Seasons at Beaumont resident. As a result of the survey, an AED Discovery and Recommendation Report has been prepared. This detailed report will be given to the Safety Committee and, subsequently, will go through each approval cycle before reaching the HOA Board for final approval or rejection. We are hopeful that we will have collected all information on both items and be able to start moving forward on them at our next meeting. New items were brought to our attention. First new item that we discussed was possible striping on Four Seasons Circle. Many residents are driving in the middle of the road, and even in the wrong lane. Please visualize the middle of the road and stay to the right of the middle. We have many golf carts and bike riders in our community, both golf carts and bike riders should stay as far right as is safe. Second item was cement trip hazards. A vendor toured our community and identified many cement trip hazards. The Safety committee is recommending that all trip hazards are removed as soon as possible. Temperatures are rising, so please be careful walking the trails during our summer months as many critters will be out and about. More information on this subject will be available at our Neighborhood Watch meeting on Wednesday, May 10 at 10 am. We welcome all homeowners to attend our meetings. Please bring any safety concerns you may have, or just come and observe. Our next meeting will be held on Friday, May 5, at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. ~ Donna Lewis Safety Committee
