FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2017 45 We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the RCN main lobby room; thus, our May meeting will be May 16. Visitors are always welcome. We invite all photographers, regardless of skill level, to join us for our regular meetings, workshops, speakers, field trips, and in-house demos. For example, in our March meeting, Irve's workshop included the use of handouts and visuals with a great Power Point presentation. At our April meeting, our chairperson, Irve Sturner, continued his presentation on the "Exposure Triangle," i.e. settings for shutter, aperture, and ISO. The genre assignment was "photography using depth of field" using the Exposure Triangle as a guide. For the coming year, we'll be planning more in-house demonstrations of photo equipment and use of various types of photography software, workshops… both in-house and in the field, guest speakers, and much more. We hope to see you soon at one of our meetings. Info., Lyle Cameron, (951) 849- 6987. ~ Lyle Cameron Camera Club Writers' Club Think you can write? Consider the different kinds of writing… diaries, journaling, blogging, poetry, short stories, novels, anthologies, opinion pieces, newspaper articles, letters, legal briefs, reports, and Facebook comments. Some people write very creative lists and notes to themselves. If you think you're a writer, now is a good time to join the Writer's Club. We have a new president and format to help writers achieve their writing goals. The March meeting hosted a guest speaker from Victory Publishing who spoke to the members collectively and individually to determine how best to achieve writing goals. Some of the topics discussed were reasons for writers' block (fear, time constraints, and lack of support) and how to publish. The new club president is resident Karla Noonan who has been writing and publishing since she was 15 years old. Karla wrote a weekly teen column in a community newspaper until she graduated high school and went to college. In college, she continued to write freelance articles for the college newspaper. Karla's career continued as a grant and curriculum writer until she recently published a novel entitled Aurora Street which is available on Amazon.com. Her first novel achieved Amazon's Bestseller status in two novel categories. Karla and the Writer's Club will be presenting a "Writing Workshop" on Tuesday, May 23 from 1 to 2:30 pm in the Lodge Ballroom. Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to attend. The Writer's Club members encourage newcomers to come to the meeting. Creativity begets creativity. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month in the Conference Room next to the Bistro. The meeting begins at 1 pm and ends at 2:30. There is no better time to join the Writer's Club! New beginnings. Check it out. For information contact Karla Noonan (951) 902-5407, knoonan1973@gmail.com. ~ Karla Noonan, President The photos in this collage were taken by our chairperson, Irve Sturner, when he was with the press corps (by invitation only) at the BNP Paribas Tennis Event at Indian Wells on March 8. With the other photographers, Irve was in the Media Room when he took ten individual images of these professional tennis players who are among the top "world class" tennis pros. Irve then arranged all ten images into a single file which generated the above collage. What if the underground railroad that smuggled escaped slaves to the North and freedom were an actual physical railway with tracks and trains operating in tunnels beneath the earth? This intriguing premise is the basis of The Underground Railroad by award-winning author Colson Whitehead. This #1 New York Times bestseller and winner of the National Book Award follows the history and desperate flight of a slave named Cora. Amazon.com says, "Cora encounters different worlds at each stage of her journey—hers is an odyssey through time as well as space… at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share." If this concept interests you, please join us at 9:30 am on Tuesday, May 9 for what promises to be a fascinating discussion. Newcomers are welcome, regardless of whether or not you have read the book. We are a friendly and informal group, so come to just listen, or join right in!
