48 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2017 Racquet Club Great weather equaled a great Play Day last month. With some 15 players on the courts, we rotated in after each service game, and there was very little waiting time to get into the action. Among the players were two visitors, Robbie and Treva, a youngish couple from Beverly Hills who were visiting their aunt, a new resident in our community. Treva, particularly, made a great impression on me. Actually, it was more of an indentation on my sternum made with a powerful forehand drive that somehow missed my racquet, but not my chest. Barbara Miller coordinates doubles play on the second and third Thursday of each month. Matches are scheduled for 6 and 7 pm, so contact her to get in some quick games in the evenings. We have been monitoring the progress of the construction of the new courts at Rec Center 3. It's not just a matter of dumping a bunch of concrete onto the ground. Concrete tennis courts consist of four inches of concrete over a graded sub-base. Then a vapor barrier, usually a 6 mil plastic liner, is installed over the sub-base and a re-bar grid is constructed before the concrete is poured. The plastic barrier will prevent moisture from being drawn into the concrete and getting trapped between the concrete and the acrylic coating system. Next, a concrete primer coat is applied to ensure that the acrylic resurfacing product will adhere to the concrete surface. The court is then flooded to reveal any low areas in the concrete surface. A patch binder mix is then applied to fill in the low areas. Two coats of acrylic resurfacing product are next applied to repair any minor imperfections in the concrete surface. Two coats of acrylic court paint are then applied, followed by the playing lines. The pace of ball bounce can be somewhat controlled by adding more or less sand to the acrylic resurfacing product and acrylic court paint. Most new courts will require a four coat color system (two coats of resurfacing product, two coats of color product). (Source: FDC Fast Dry Courts website.) The monthly Play Days are scheduled for the last Saturday of each month, beginning at 8:30 am. If everything continues to develop according to plans, we may actually have the May Play Day on the new courts. Check out www.fsbrc.org. ~ Steve Hovey
